In February, OCTribe is happy to welcome back Marc Smith, sociologist and one of the team members behind NodeXL social network analysis software.

Charting Collections of Connections in Social Media: Creating Maps and Measures with NodeXL

Networks are everywhere and analysis of connected structures can provide powerful insights into social media and communities. But if you are not a software developer there are few tools for understanding webs of connections. The NodeXL (http://nodexl.codeplex.com (http://nodexl.codeplex.com/)) project from the Social Media Research Foundation (http://smrfoundation.org (http://smrfoundation.org/)) seeks to make network analysis as easy as making a pie chart. With a few clicks, get insights into the shapes of discussions and online groups, quickly identifying key people, neighborhoods, and topics. A collection of these maps and reports can be found at http://nodexlgraphgallery.org (http://nodexlgraphgallery.org/). When crowds of people gather we often take a picture. Crowds of people are gathering online all the time. With NodeXL we can now take an aerial photo of these groups to gain an overview and deeper understanding of the shapes of these crowds.
