  • Training Session for Mushroom Collecting
This meet-up is a training session for field collection and preservation of mushrooms in Alameda County. Citizen Scientists are needed to gather and process mushrooms for long-term storage in study collections. We will take participants out for forays and gather mushrooms of all shapes and sizes. Volunteers taking part in the MycoFlora of Alameda County Study will be trained to find, photograph, upload to iNaturalist, dry and voucher mushrooms for scientific study. Each volunteer receives a procedure packet with instructions for the project and will be invited to participate in wildland collection forays to hunt for mushrooms. This project is a subproject of the North American Mycoflora Project to document and store material from the wild.

  • Synthetic Biology, Biohacking and Cheese - Real Vegan Cheese team meeting
The Real Vegan Cheese (https://realvegancheese.org/) project is an award-winning collaboration between Counter Culture Labs and our sister lab BioCurious (http://www.biocurious.org/) in Sunnyvale, to make real cheese without using any animals! Real Vegan Cheese is a not a cheese substitute! It all starts with regular old baker's yeast. Through synthetic biology, we engineer our yeast to become milk-protein factories. Our milk proteins are then combined with water and vegan oil to make Vegan Milk which is ultimately converted into Real Vegan Cheese through standard cheese-making processes - just like cheese made from cow or goat milk! Feel free to come check us out. We're hoping to actually get work done in these meetings, so we will likely not give an extensive introduction to any newbies, but you're more than welcome to sit in and absorb some biohacking-in-action. • Robotics For Biohacking
    • What we'll do This is Counter Cultures Labs's biweekly meetup to talk about and work on robotics for biohacking. Our current main project is rehabilitating CCL's custom OpenTrons liquid handling robot. This unit is the largest OpenTrons robot in the world, and was built to pipette liquids, run PCR, and even pick colonies from plates using machine vision! Unfortunately, there were a few bumps along the road when it was donated to the lab, and now it needs a little TLC before it's back in action. There's plenty to do for both hardware and software - and since it's a custom robot, if we can figure out how to rig up a new feature, there's no reason we can't make the robot do it. This is an ongoing project, so most meetups we jump in and work hands-on with the robot right away. Still, we absolutely welcome people new to the project, and people new to robotics and/or biology in general. It's fun! • What to bring Enthusiasm for robots. • Important to know This isn't a super formal meeting, so feel free to arrive late or leave early if you have another obligation.

  • Kombucha Genomics project
Welcome to our new community project: Kombucha Genomics! For all you fermented foods lovers out there, this is the project for you. Over the course of the next couple months, we'll go through all the steps to isolate and identify a variety of bacterial and yeast strains from kombucha or other fermented foods (bring your own), starting with the basic culturing and progressing all the way through DNA barcoding, genome and microbiome sequencing, systems biology, synthetic biology, and more! Kombucha (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombucha) is a fermented tea with a very complex symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts (SCOBY) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCOBY), composed of dozens of different species. It's a health food; it's a tasty fizzy caffeinated beverage; it even makes vegan leather (http://www.ecouterre.com/u-k-designer-grows-an-entire-wardrobe-from-tea-fermenting-bacteria/) - what's not to like! We are also running a series of Lab Skills 101 classes on Saturday mornings to tie into this project (and allow folks from other time zones to call in!). We hope to run this project in collaboration with our friends at BioCurious and other community labs around the world.
