It is an open format where everyone is welcome independent of their age, gender or knowledge. People bring their computers, mobile devices, and a willingness to learn! CryptoParty is a decentralized, global initiative to introduce the most basic cryptography software and the fundamental concepts of their operation to the general public, such as the Tor anonymity network, public key encryption (PGP/GPG), and OTR (Off The Record messaging). Presentation: What VPNs are Good For, and How to Pick a Good One

TheLab.ms - Plano's Makerspace

Welcome to Cryptoparty! We're all about providing resources for regular folks seeking to secure their communications in a casual, fun, and positive environment. Our events are free of charge, open to anyone, and politically non-aligned. There are many aspects to masking your browsing and other Internet activity. Blocking web trackers and cookies is great, but the sites you visit are still visible to your internet service provider. Tor offers pretty good anonymity and masks your activity from the network operator, but it's not very fast, and certain sites block Tor users altogether. Also, what if you don't want your ISP knowing that you're using Tor? A good VPN service is an excellent tool to have in your privacy toolbox. It doesn't solve everything, and it requires trusting your provider, but it very nicely fills in some of the gaps left by other privacy tools. This month, we'll talk about the specific problems that VPN services solve, and look at some operational security considerations when using them. We'll also broadly discuss what's involved in selecting a VPN service, setting it up, and using it on a day-to-day basis. After the presentation, there will be an open workshop time during which you'll be able to get one-on-one help with electronic privacy tools such as GnuPG, Tor, TAILS, KeePass, VeraCrypt, and Signal.
