What we're about

☕Current Events Coffee is a community for people who like to think about what's going on in politics, foreign affairs, the economy, etc. and discuss how these things reflect broader trends and affect our daily lives.
Every ~month we discuss a handful of topics that are in the headlines, selected and announced a ~week before the meeting. Come informed and ready to contribute; or, if you missed out on what's going on, come ready to listen and think critically. The goal? To leave with fresh info and new perspectives.
We all bring something different to the table when we read the news, and it's great to get a chance to discuss. We'd love to have you join us!
Format/what to expect: We sit around a table and talk--that's really it. Attendance is capped at 14 to allow everyone to hear and talk, and to avoid side conversations, so RSVPs can fill up well in advance. We do some light moderation to keep us on topic and make sure nuanced views/perspectives can be heard, explored, and understood.

Upcoming events (4+)

[In-Person @ 10:30a, Bryant Park] Topics TBD: 1/6, FBI raid? Rushie stabbing?

Details on location later, but it will be outdoor seating somewhere in Bryant Park. We will trial the use of phones to help people hear each other over masks and ambient noises. You do NOT need a phone to participate. You must bring a pair of earpieces and arrive by 10:15 am to receive technical support to set it up, although it's fairly straightforward. Only a cellphone is required, but a smartphone with either text or data plan can make the process much easier. Basically, we'll use phones and headset as mikes and hearing aids. Again, it's optional.

Most regulars require safety precautions to meet in-person. If you cannot abide by the mask and booster requirements, please attend our Zoom meetups. Participants must complete this google form by the Friday before the meeting to avoid being moved to the waitlist.

Physical meetups will usually take place on the 4th Sunday each month.

Please let me know if you need a mask--I can bring extras. Look under "How to find us" for the exact location once you're signed up. I'll email my number on the day of the event in case you can't find us.

We always incorporate topic suggestions into an upcoming discussion, so tell us.

RSVPs will close at midnight before the event. We are enforcing a smaller roster to ensure everyone can hear each other, so habitual no-shows will be demoted on the RSVP list. Please change your RSVP to No before the event date if you cannot attend, to allow someone else to do so. Thank you.

Please check that you're getting group notifications from meetup, and check the inbox and spam folders associated with your meetup account. Also, whitelist meetup emails with your email service (gmail, outlook, etc.)

[ONLINE] News Topics TBD

Link visible for attendees

We always incorporate topic suggestions into an upcoming discussion, don't be shy.

Online meetings will now happen on the second Sunday of each month, until we go fully remote again. The Zoom link will be visible on this page, only to people who make the RSVP list. Zoom links are no longer emailed. Make sure you're signed into zoom.us before clicking on the link.

When online we'll try to accommodate everyone who wants to attend, so sign up for the waitlist even if the event seems full. However, if you don't have a history of attendance, we may ask for email confirmation of your interest. Repeated no-shows may be pushed onto the waitlist next time the RSVP gets full. Remember to change your RSVP if your plans change.
