Join us for DAMA SA - Big Data and Data Science monthly meetup as we welcome Thembani Phaweni as our guest speaker.
Over a year ago, Thembani started collecting tweets from a number of lists on Twitter. He recently pulled this data down from the cloud, where it's been stored. After some exploratory analysis, it became clear that a good way to understand the tweets' actual text content was needed. Many topic modelling approaches were applied. This talk is about how they worked out.
Thembani's days are spent applying machine learning to unstructured data, mostly in the domain of natural language in written and spoken form. He is the current Vice President of the Cape Town Machine Learning Society, where guests are invited to share their knowledge with the community. Thembani also coordinates a YouTube channel called the dataChiefShow, which focuses on the Pan-African experience of being a data scientist. Outside of these exploits, he enjoys a good film and an even better meal hopefully prepared by someone else without the obligation to do dishes.
