Keynote Presentation by Awalin Sopan (https://www.linkedin.com/in/awalinsopan/)

For our Quarterly Keynote Presentation we welcome Awalin Sopan (https://www.linkedin.com/in/awalinsopan/) information security analyst applying data visualization and UI in Security Operation Centers. Data Viz plays an interesting role for Awalin and information security analysts working in Security Operation Centers (SOC). These security analysts monitor security log data from heterogeneous security devices across networks and to create an in-depth view of who is attacking what, when there doing it, and how to stop them. Visualizing this large-scale data to a succinct human digestible form can reduce their cognitive load and enable them to operate more efficiently.

The goal of this talk is to provide a better understanding of:

• types of data used for cyber threat detection

• problems faced by analysts while trying to understand a possible cyber-attack

• designing user interface for the analysts with a focus on data visualization

• mapping between cyber data and visualization type

Awalin is a Senior Software Engineer at FireEye, Inc., a leading name in information security consulting globally, where she specializes in building analytics interface for security analysts. Awalin earned her Masters' in Computer Science with a focus on Human Computer Interaction and Dataviz, from the University of Maryland, College Park. In her current role, Awalin closely collaborates with cyber security analysts developing and designing a one-stop web interface to detect and tackle cyber-attacks.
