What we're about

Are you an adult living in Denver or one of the surrounding cities with high-functioning autism (formerly known as Asperger Syndrome), but you can't find a Meetup group that does sociable events for adults? Are you only running into Meetups that are only for parents with children with autism, social Meetup groups only for teens/young adults, or Meetups only meant for support but not meant for socializing? Then this is the group for you! We intend on getting together for fun things, like bowling, trivia, going to movies, or other activities that members of our group are interested in. This is not a group that gets together to just talk about our condition, but one that has people with our condition meet each other and maybe find a new friend by doing fun things to break the ice! As we all know, it's difficult for us to find new friends because we are very introverted in most cases. It might be more comfortable to find a friend who has the same condition because we can relate. I (along with some of my Event Organizers) are going to schedule Meetup activities for us to expand our horizons. Feel free to ask me (Shawn McKenzie) or one of the Event Organizers if we could set up fun activities that interest you! This group is mainly meant for adults 18-years-old or older (21 if some of our Meetup events are in bars), but if you (or a parent) write to me asking for their young adult under 18 to join the group, I will seriously consider it.

At the 16th Street Mall Fair we can see the designs and crafts of emerging artists original handmade goods. Entrance is free. We can meet up in front of the Union Station W-lone light rail tracks. I will be holding a small sign with an autism ribbon on it. Most likely I will be seated, or near, one of the cement planter-benches. There are music, food and crafts for purchase. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below or PM me. http://16thstfair.com (*All events organized by Zion have a primary focus of KINDNESS, UNDERSTANDING & ACCEPTANCE. Hiking at White Ranch Park

White Ranch Park - West Access

Who wants to take a hike?! Jefferson County has some great open spaces. Less than an hour from Denver, in Golden, is White Ranch Park. It provides several miles of trails and some beautiful scenery. Let’s plan to meet at the West Trailhead (25373 Belcher Hill Road, Golden) by 9:00am and start our hike around 9:30, before it gets too hot. You must be there ON TIME to join the group, or plan on hiking faster to catch up with us. We will hike the entire length/loop of Rawhide Trail, over to an intermediate section of Longhorn Trail, switchback onto Maverick Trail and then back up to the parking lot/picnic area via Sawmill Trail to eat our lunches. The first 10 people to arrive (before 9:30) will get a free goodie bag with snacks and other useful things. Hike: - beginner-intermediate routes - altitude is between 7,250’ - 7,600’ - about 7.5 miles (there are short cuts back to the parking/picnic area for those who cannot go as far & more trails in case we decide we want a longer hike. I may also want to check out the campgrounds that are available.) - depending on everyone’s ability and willingness to hike, and how many times we stop for photos, snacking or bathrooms, it should take around 3 hours. What you’ll need: - water, water, & more water (or other hydration drinks) - trail snacks/lunch (examples: granola, beef jerky, protein bars, fruit snacks, cheese sticks, peanut butter, healthy sandwich, fruit, vegetables, etc.) - layers (It will be warmer as the day progresses and we may get a sprinkle of rain. Plan to bring clothes you can take off or put back on depending on how your body feels at different temperatures.) - sunglasses (so you don’t end up blind) - hat or bandana (if you need to keep sun from your head/face - sunscreen (if you don’t want to burn) - a backpack (to carry everything in) - shoes that lace and can get dirty Weather: Currently the weather says a high of 75 with intermittent afternoon showers. (I’ll update this as the date gets closer.) If we foresee very bad weather, we will reschedule the hike for the 30th, or another day when it will be nicer out. Carpooling: I can bring several others in my vehicle. If you need a ride, you MUST message me prior to the 29th. We will meet at the Knox Light Rail Station NO LATER than 8am, with all of your hiking gear. Plan to return to Denver no earlier than 2pm and using the rail to get back home, unless we discuss otherwise. If you drive to the station, there is plenty of parking on 12th Avenue to leave your car. Pets: Whatever we bring in to the park we must bring out and place waste/trash in proper receptacles. Friendly dogs are allowed, but they must be kept on a leash 10ft. or less and picked up after. I will not be held responsible for people who do not bring the needed items, or for injuries that may occur on the trail. However, I will do my best to help anyone should an injury occur. I have basic first aid skills, disaster relief training, and am certified in CPR, but let’s try to stay safe because I would really hate to have anyone in pain or have to call an ambulance. ;o) For more information about Jefferson County Open Space rules & regulations, click here: https://www.jeffco.us/1583/Regulations To see a full map of White Ranch Park, click here: https://www.jeffco.us/1437/White-Ranch-Park/

SAME Cafe - Meet & Eat

Location visible to members

Come meet each other at the SAME Cafe, a place So All May Eat! Once a month on the 1st Wednesday, we can MEET & EAT lunch together. Together we will enjoy some wholesome food and company. This meet-up is particularly good for those who enjoy or create art, but anyone can join us. There are other artists who meet at the Cafe and there is an opportunity to showcase your own works and even sell them. The SAME Cafe is located a half block east of Race Street on Colfax Avenue. It’s a special place designed for people of all varieties and income levels. It is donation and fair-exchanged based, which means you pay what you can afford, volunteer your time, or donate produce in exchange for your meal. An average donation is around $5, but if you can afford more, your donation goes towards helping others who have less. If you can’t afford $5, don’t worry, everyone is served the same regardless of their ability to pay. I will have a small sign with an autism ribbon printed on it so everyone knows where to gather. Check out the SAME Cafe website for more information and their daily menus — https://www.soallmayeat.org (*All events organized by Zion have a primary focus of KINDNESS, UNDERSTANDING & ACCEPTANCE.
