As organizations break their monoliths apart into microservices, they are seeing a myriad of benefits, but there are also certain challenges that arise. One of the largest is being able to monitor and control service to service communications. Things like DNS and configuration management can alleviate some of these pains, but a service mesh pulls together several technologies that negate the need to spend a large amount of time managing microservices.
Istio, an open source contribution, is a solution that is leveraging the sidecar service mesh approach pioneered by Envoy and companies like Netflix and Lyft. Istio provides a uniform way to connect, secure, manage and monitor microservices. Istio is currently targeted at the Kubernetes environment.
In this presentation, Aspen Mesh will provide an overview of Istio and its architecture, demo how to get started with Istio and take advantage of some core functionality and demonstrate the value Aspen Mesh adds on top of Istio.
