What we're about

*** Important info, please read! ***

Come learn Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition (latest version) in a comfortable and welcoming environment. New and experienced players are both welcome!

We’ll be playing a mix of one-shot adventures designed specifically for new players. Ask questions, learn how to play, and meet new people! Pre-made characters are provided in the event description or you can roll your own on D&D Beyond. Play time is typically around 4 hours. Please arrive on time and keep your RSVP status up-to-date! More details can be found in the individual events.

Some of the common questions we get:

What if I've never played D&D before and know nothing about it? Perfect! Lots of people who show up for Newbie Sessions have never played before. You'll be in good company and we will help you along the way!

Can I spectate a game? Unfortunately, no. We found spectators to be disruptive because they were connecting and disconnecting or forgetting to mute their microphones. We also found that many players don’t like having an audience when they play since it adds more pressure. See our FAQ for more information.

Which races and classes can I play? This may depend on your DM, but generally anything officially published and playtested is acceptable. See our Player Resources page on each event for more information.

What is a one-shot? What if I missed the last event? That's ok! One-shots are events that are completed in a single sitting. Each game is independent from the others. Just don't sign-up for the same event a second time because it's the same story.

What if I'm not very creative or bad at roleplaying? No problem. We've got you covered! If you're struggling with something, the DM will step in and help provide some ideas. Many new players struggle with the openness and freedom of D&D. We'll be there to support you throughout the entire game.

In-Person Pickup D&D 5e Oneshot (Close to Capital Hill)

Needs a location

This event is scheduled to be simultaneous with another of our events at the same location. Please ONLY RSVP FOR ONE of them.
Jess (the event organizer) will be present but will be running the game at one of the tables in the back. This event will be hosted at Escapology Escape Rooms Denver (a full bar/restaurant/Escape Room).
We’ll be playing with level 5 characters. You are welcome to create your own level 5 character before hand (using standard published rules). Please plan to play a character of a something-good alignment (it just works better for a on-shot with strangers). I will ask to review/approve your characters before the game if you do. If you're a newbie, you're welcome to just show up and I'll have some pre-generated characters you can use.
The event is free to attend. Attendance is capped so we have the right amount of people. Please RSVP with a higher level of certainty than you would for an online event because we can't just reach out to the Discord community to back-fill no-shows.
Food/Drink: Attendees are highly encouraged to purchase refreshments for themselves of the bar and restaurant services available at Escapology Escape Rooms Denver. They don't make any money by just hosting our game so... let's support our local small business!

In-person Pickup D&D 5e - Alternative Setting - UnFamiliar

Needs a location

Normally I do this type of event on Tuesdays but lots of folks have been asking about it lately so for this week we'll do it on Monday as well so that more players can experience the setting.

This event will be hosted at Game Train USA (a full bar/restaurant/board game store).

I'll be exploring an alternative/unusual campaign setting. I have lots of kickstarter settings to try. Also a few homebrew ones.

This Time: The setting for this particular event is a Kickstarter book called UnFamiliar. Players will play as pre-gen animal (former) familiars! These are actual familiar spirits that have taken on animal form. They talk, fight, cast spells... but do so without opposable thumbs... or even hands in some cases... These are NOT Furries or Anthropomorphs. This book provides a whole set of character creation rules for making playable familiars as characters. The pre-gen characters I provide you to play in this setting will still be of a something-good alignment. Part of the challenge of playing an UnFamiliar is describing how your character manages every day tasks or acquires armor small enough to fit...

This is still an event where I will cater to newbies. However, it is probably better to experience a standard fantasy setting game (like the ones I run on Mondays and Wednesdays) for your absolute first game.

A common part of playing in a new setting is getting to experience some alternative/unusual character creation options. Another part is playing "within the theme of the setting". It takes a lot of work for a DM to prep a new world of imagination (even using a published setting book) for you to roleplay as characters in. It's respectful conduct for players to not intentionally sacrifice the DMs idea of immersion in that world just cause they really really wanna play a particular character build from another setting.

In order to keep this game newbie friendly... and to not spend all day on character creation and never get to the adventure... I will be providing a selection of pre-made characters of appropriate level, background, and within the "theme". Please assume that (for this event) you'll be playing a pre-made character and you'll just get to customize the name, gender,..., the very basics at the start of the game. The character background provided will also hook nicely into the theme and world setting; so expect a little bit or reading at the start of the session.

You won't need to prep or read anything (beyond this event description and comments section) to attend. Just come ready to play and experience something... a little different.

Alternative campaign settings my differ drastically in any of the following ways:

  • character races
  • character classes
  • setting themes/locations
  • setting time periods/technology levels
  • spells
  • pantheons
  • some additional mechanics (Space Ships, Air Ships, Hex Grid Crawl, Crafting... )

The event is free to attend. Attendance is capped so we have the right amount of people. Please RSVP with a higher level of certainty than you would for an online event because we can't just reach out to the Discord community to back-fill no-shows.

About the DM: I’m DM David (D&D 5e Dungeon Master in the Highlands Ranch/Littleton Colorado area). I've been running games online throughout COVID times... but it's time to get out of the house a little. Stylistically, I favor cinematic story telling over tactical combat simulation game play. There will be "combat" content in this adventure but it'll all be done via "Theater of the Mind" (ie. no fancy battlemaps and minis covering the table).

Also:
Showing up to a Meetup event where you don't know anyone can be a lil scary. If you'd like to get to know the DM a little... Sam (the owner of this Meetup Group) and I did a little podcast episode on youtube. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S7zsvxW8DQ
