What we’re about
*** Important info, please read! ***
Come learn Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition (latest version) in a comfortable and welcoming environment. New and experienced players are both welcome!
We’ll be playing a mix of one-shot adventures designed specifically for new players. Ask questions, learn how to play, and meet new people! Pre-made characters are provided in the event description or you can roll your own on D&D Beyond. Play time is typically around 4 hours. Please arrive on time and keep your RSVP status up-to-date! More details can be found in the individual events.
Some of the common questions we get:
What if I've never played D&D before and know nothing about it? Perfect! Lots of people who show up for Newbie Sessions have never played before. You'll be in good company and we will help you along the way!
Can I spectate a game? Unfortunately, no. We found spectators to be disruptive because they were connecting and disconnecting or forgetting to mute their microphones. We also found that many players don’t like having an audience when they play since it adds more pressure. See our FAQ for more information.
Which races and classes can I play? This may depend on your DM, but generally anything officially published and playtested is acceptable. See our Player Resources page on each event for more information.
What is a one-shot? What if I missed the last event? That's ok! One-shots are events that are completed in a single sitting. Each game is independent from the others. Just don't sign-up for the same event a second time because it's the same story.
What if I'm not very creative or bad at roleplaying? No problem. We've got you covered! If you're struggling with something, the DM will step in and help provide some ideas. Many new players struggle with the openness and freedom of D&D. We'll be there to support you throughout the entire game.

Upcoming events (4+)
See all- In-person Pickup D&D 5e Adventure @ 7pm MST2690 E County Line Rd, Highlands Ranch, CO
This event will be hosted at Game Train USA (a full bar/restaurant/board game store).
New to D&D?: Good. We all were once. Just come. No need to bring anything besides yourself. We'll set you up for the night with all you need to play and answer all your questions.
D&D Characters: We’ll be playing with level 3 characters. You are welcome to create your own level 3 character before hand (using standard published rules). Please plan to play a character of a something-good alignment (it just works better for a one-shot with strangers). If you're a newbie, you're welcome to just show up and we'll have some pre-generated characters you can use.
Attendance: The event is free to attend (but with a small caveat below). Attendance is capped so we have the right amount of people. Please RSVP with a higher level of certainty than you would for an online event because we can't just reach out to the Discord community to back-fill no-shows.
Game Train Minimum Purchase Requirement: Game Train requires attendees to purchase any combination of food, beverage, or retail products adding up to $25 each visit or you will be charged a $7 fee for just coming to play. These purchases/fees cover "your enjoyment of their venue".
None of that money goes to the event organizers or dungeon masters who do all they do as volunteers pursuing shared experiences in their favorite hobby. Please keep in mind that our dungeon masters may also be newbies themselves. This is still a free event run by un-paid volunteers... but in a nice venue that needs to manage to pay their employees somehow.

Also: Showing up to a Meetup event where you don't know anyone can be a lil scary. If you'd like to get to know the DM a little... Sam (the owner of this Meetup Group) and I did a little podcast episode on youtube. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S7zsvxW8DQ
Bringing your kids: Meetup has an age policy that members must be at least 18 years of age. We enjoy seeing parents participate in D&D with their teens (either as players or DMs). Parents are welcome to do so provided;
-
You work within the meetup member policies (Found Here) AND
-
You and your teen BOTH actually play in the game AND
-
You RSVP yourself with a +1 so we can keep a good head count for RSVPs.
Please note that this is a public pick-up game at a bar. Most folks are quite pleasant but we can't guarantee anything. Demographically, attendees tend to be working or retired adults.
Feel free to ask additional questions in the event comments below.

- Tuesday In-person Pickup One-Shot Adventure - Root RPGGame Train, Highlands Ranch, CO
For this event, I'll be running an introductory one-shot adventure of "Root TTRPG"! (not the same as the tabletop board game)
Please RSVP on the post hosted under the Denver RPG Group meetup.
RSVP Link: https://www.meetup.com/denver-rpg/events/296391997/
This is a cross-post. RSVP seats will be limited.
If you struggle to "apply to the Denver RPG Group" meetup... or it seems like their group application approver is being slow... then post a comment on this event saying you'd like to attend and I'll adjust the RSVPs manually.Expectations: This will NOT turn into a long running campaign. You're welcome to make friends and join us repeatedly but I intend to cycle through lots of different (non-D&D) game systems by running these periodic pickup one-shots.
Newbies Welcome. I've run the "Denver D&D Newbies" Meetup group for years. I'm very accustomed to teaching folks that have never role played. I will always cater to the newest newbie at the table.
Characters: I will be providing pre-gen characters for everyone. Please don't bring your own.
Dice: You'll need just 2 d6 for this game system. You're welcome to borrow mine if you wish.
The Rules: I will be teaching the game along the way. No need to learn anything before hand. However, if you're curious, you're welcome to watch this video for a sneak peek: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGiiaiRIOWI

About the Host: I’m DM David. Stylistically, I like story telling. I often give players "dares" or "challenges" for the night to encourage them to go beyond the game mechanics and improve their role playing. I like to teach and to grow the gaming community. I'm also a big supporter of 3rd party TTRPG publishers #OpenDnD. Most content I run is either homebrew, 100% improv, or something from a Kickstarter.
