PRESENTATION: Come hear Keith Akers talk on “Climate change and veganism — an update”
Livestock agriculture is a key cause of climate change, but what is livestock’s contribution to this problem? In the recent book EAT FOR THE PLANET, the authors cite two conflicting figures: 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, or 51% from livestock. Wait a minute! These are very different figures — one is over three times greater than the other. What’s going on here?
Keith will help you understand why these estimates are so divergent, and will link climate change with numerous other environmental problems that are waiting in the wings: peak oil, mass extinctions, water shortages, and soil erosion. We are persistently unable to act on climate change because we face limits to economic growth; truly effective action on climate change would mean basic lifestyle changes, especially for the advanced industrial countries. Rather than using our cleverness to delay or deny the inevitable, we need to embrace these limits and transform our culture.
