What we're about

Underwater hockey meetup group for the Denver area. We would like to invite you to try underwater hockey, a fun a competitive sport. For more information on underwater hockey, see this introductory video ( https://vimeo.com/6919536 )

WHERE?

Lakewood practices are held at the Carmody Recreation Center at 2200 S (Old) Kipling St. in Lakewood, CO. See the map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=2200+Kipling+Street,+Lakewood,+CO&sll=39.785323,-104.911194&sspn=1.108045,1.873169&gl=us&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=2200+Kipling+St,+Lakewood,+Jefferson,+Colorado+80215&z=16) for directions.

WHEN?

Sunday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:30 and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30. Please consult this meetup site to confirm that we are meeting on specific dates. Please arrive 15 minutes early so we can start on time. New players will be contacted before their first game and their assigned coach for that game will give them a time to meet at the pool for extra instruction.

WHO?

Practices are open to men and women of all ages. Beginners are welcome but limited to two new players per session. Practices usually consist of scrimmage and instructional sessions, so there's something for everyone.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Currently there is a $10/game drop in fee. Eventually we will re-instate a per-practice or per-quarter fee. For detailed payment information for Lakewood practices, please speak with Chris Debrunner, the Lakewood club Treasurer (you can catch him at practice most of the time).

NOTE: The club rents the pool, so you should not pay to get in for our practices. When you come into the Carmody facility, tell the staff at the front desk that you are there to play Underwater Hockey.

WHAT DO I BRING?

We are requiring all players to bring their own mask and snorkel. We have the rest of the gear available to borrow, but if you have your own fins, please do bring them!

Denver / Lakewood Underwater Hockey Practice

Carmody Rec. Center

Good news! We are now accepting new players again at our regular practices.

You MUST bring your own mask and snorkel, or you will not be able to play. Other necessary gear will be available to borrow, but not masks or snorkels.

You MUST RSVP on Meetup ahead of time, or you will not be able to play. Please try your best to honor this RSVP, and to arrive early to your first practice. First time players, please RSVP at least 24 hours ahead of time.

Once you RSVP to a practice, one of our regular players will message you to assist with further details. We have limited coaching available, so in rare cases of too many first-time players who RSVP to a particular practice, we may need to arrange for you to RSVP to a different practice.

The cost to play is $10 per practice. We will need a player’s full name and email address in order to collect payment.

Please do NOT attend if you:
- Are experiencing Covid- or flu-like symptoms
- Have been tested for Covid and are pending results
- Have been exposed within the past 14 days to someone with Covid-19 or who is experiencing flu-like symptoms

Remember that you are playing at your own risk. All players are responsible for mitigating that risk as much as possible. If you are not comfortable with the Covid risk, do not come to practice. If you do come to practice, you are expected to do your part to stop the spread of the virus and ensure we do not lose our pool privileges.

Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow yourself time to gear up.

Underwater Rugby

Carmody Rec. Center

Are you interested in spending more time underwater? Then give underwater rugby a try! Underwater Rugby (UWR) is a three-dimensional team sport played in a dive well with two metal baskets for goals at the bottom of the pool. The ball is filled with salt water and may not leave the water. Unlike UWH, players in possession of the ball may be grabbed by opponents or grab other players (in a safe and appropriate manner and let go when no longer in possession of the ball). Come test your strength, speed, agility, breath control and teamwork in a different way underwater!

The first few sessions will be most skills. but we try to do a little scrimmage each time. Please watch this introduction video to help give you an idea of what you are getting yourself into! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm0DCCrHUmE. Also, if you have them, bring white and dark water polo caps, so you know who your teammates are. For safety and preventing accidental scratches, please trim your fingernails before practice.
