It's been a while since we've had some great Cajun and Creole food, and look at this, a new place just opened in December in the Central West End serving just that! Naturally I had to check it out, and my oh my, they have some wonderful goodies! Could a dinner event be far behind? Of course not!
Cuisine - A person could write a dissertation on the background and nuance of Cajun and Creole cuisine (and I've more or less done so a time or two in the past!), but let's just figure that you probably have a good idea of what to expect - a novel blending of French and Caribbean flavors, often with a bit of a kick. Most dishes involve seafood such as shrimp or crawfish, chicken, or andouille sausage, or often, a blend of all of them! At Evangeline's, you'll find virtually a textbook display of Cajun and Creole favorites, from Gumbo to Jambalaya, from Red Beans & Rice to Crawfish Etouffee, from Shrimp Po'Boy to Andouille Muffaletta. You'll also find dishes such as the "Crawfish Carolyn" - made with crawfish tails, brandy cream sauce, and parmesan cheese - that may be one of the most rich and delicious appetizers I've ever tasted; and their Cajun garlic cheese bread is perhaps the best garlic bread on the planet - and I'm a definite garlic bread snob! Bottom line, you'll find a great cross-section of Cajun and Creole dishes here, and from my experience, they are all awesome!
Cost - What's the best way to improve delicious food? Getting it at a very low cost, of course! Appetizers, sandwishes, and main dishes all cluster right around the $10 mark, with only a handful items that climb into the mid teens; and even some of those offer half-portions! Bottom line, you're going to get some delicious dinner for very little cost!
Other Info - Evangeline's is located on the northern end of the Central West End, on the southeast corner of Euclid and Washington (in the former location of Coco Louco). Parking is on-street, but this end of Euclid usually has a fair amount of space available.
As with many of our dinners, please feel free to spread out your arrival time between 6:30 and 7:00. They will take orders as tables are seated making the process a little smoother. And just plan on relaxing and enjoying the socializing!
I'll be looking forward to seeing lots of my frugal foodies at Evangeline's on Thursday evening the 27th!
