• Gay Book Discussion: "A History of Violence," by Eduoard Louis
This 2018 autobiographical novel is about surviving a shocking sexual assault and coping with the post-traumatic stress disorder of its aftermath. A bestseller in France, it is a short nonfiction novel in the tradition of Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood,” but with the victim as its subject. Moving seamlessly and hypnotically between past and present, between Louis’s voice and the voice of an imagined narrator, it has the exactness of a police report and the searching, unflinching curiosity of memoir at its best. This is a casual gathering held on the second Sunday of the month for fun and stimulating discussions about quality gay literature. Books are selected by participants several months in advance, and the only requirements for attending are to RSVP, to have read a substantial part of what’s being discussed, and to bring a snack or beverage to share. Arrive as early at 6:00, discussion begins at 6:45 and ends by 8:30.

  • Gay Book Discussion: "Conundrum: The Evolution of Homosexuality"
This month we’ll discuss “Conundrum: The Evolution of Homosexuality,” by N.J. Peters, which is a pro-gay, pro-science look at a vexing issue. Evolutionary biology suggests that individual living things are designed to reproduce, so why does homosexuality exist? Wouldn't a gay gene ensure its own demise? Conundrum pulls together information from biology, anthropology, and recent lesbian and gay history, and suggests that both nature and nurture are involved in the evolution of homosexuality. • Gay Book Discussion: "A Streetcar Named Desire," by Tennessee Williams
This month we’ll discuss Tennessee Williams’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, “A Streetcar Named Desire.” It is often regarded as among the finest plays of the 20th century, and is considered by many to be Williams' greatest work. The story recounts how the faded and promiscuous Blanche DuBois is pushed over the edge by her sexy and brutal brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. In the movie adaptation, they were played by Vivian Lee and Marlon Brando. This is a casual gathering held on the second Sunday of the month for fun and stimulating discussions about quality gay literature. Books are selected by participants several months in advance, and the only requirements for attending are to RSVP, to have read a substantial part of what’s being discussed, and to bring a snack or beverage to share.
