  • Book Discussion via ZOOM: "Cleanness," by Garth Greenwell

We moved our monthly book discussion online in April, and it’s looking like we’ll be doing that for many months to come. Once you RSVP, you'll get instructions on how to connect to ZOOM. If you're not used to using ZOOM, we encourage you to start trying to connect at 6:15. From 6:30 to about 6:45, we chat and see how everyone is doing. The book discussion starts at 6:45. You'll get a ZOOM link when you RSVP: if you want to connect in another manner (e.g. voice-only call via telephone), contact Kevin, the event organizer at least 2 days before the event. This month’s book: in the highly anticipated follow-up to "What Belongs to You," Greenwell deepens his exploration of foreignness, obligation, and desire. Sofia, Bulgaria, stirs with hope and impending upheaval. Soviet buildings crumble, wind scatters sand from the far south, and political protesters flood the streets with song. In this atmosphere of disquiet, an American teacher navigates a life transformed by the discovery and loss of love. As he prepares to leave the place he’s come to call home, he grapples with the intimate encounters that have marked his years abroad. Each echo reveals startling insights about what it means to seek connection: with those we love, with the places we inhabit, and with our own fugitive selves. Our group is a casual gathering of gay men on the second Sunday of the month: we have fun and stimulating discussions about quality gay literature. When shelter-in-place orders are fully lifted, we'll resume meeting in person and discussing the book over a potluck meal. Books are selected by participants several months in advance, and the only requirements for participating via ZOOM are to RSVP and to have read a substantial part of what’s being discussed. Once we resume in-person meetings, attendees are expected to bring food and/or a beverage to share. **** Note to all Discovery Community members: Want to host an event? • ZOOM Book Discussion: How to Write an Autobiographical Novel, by Chee Alexander

This month's selection is "How to Write an Autobiographical Novel: Essays," by Chee Alexander. It appeared on many 2018 “best book” lists, and the New York Times Book Review said this: “If writing, too, is a form of drag for Chee, it is also an act of mystic invocation and transference... these pieces are personal, never pedagogical. They bespeak an unguarded sincerity and curiosity. Chee is refreshingly open about his sometimes liberating, sometimes claustrophobic sense of exceptionality ... It is not necessary to agree that How to Write an Autobiographical Novel is itself a kind of novel in order to appreciate that Chee has written a moving and personal tribute to impermanence, a wise and transgressive meditation on a life lived both because of and in spite of America, a place where, he writes, you are allowed to speak the truth as long as nothing changes.'" • Book Discussion via ZOOM: No Ashes in the Fire, by Darnell L. Moore

This month's selection is "Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black and Free in America, by Darnell L. Moore. Moore is a leading journalist and activist, and this is a brave, beautifully wrought memoir. When hewas fourteen, three boys from his neighborhood tried to set him on fire. They cornered him while he was walking home from school, harassed him because they thought he was gay, and poured a jug of gasoline on him. He escaped, but just barely. It wasn't the last time he would face death. Three decades later, Moore is an award-winning writer, a leading Black Lives Matter activist, and an advocate for justice and liberation. In his book, he shares the journey taken by that scared, bullied teenager who not only survived, but found his calling. Moore's transcendence over the myriad forces of repression that faced him is a testament to the grace and care of the people who loved him, and to his hometown, Camden, NJ, scarred and ignored but brimming with life. Moore reminds us that liberation is possible if we commit ourselves to fighting for it, and if we dream and create futures where those who survive on society's edges can thrive. • Book Discussion via ZOOM: Crossing: A Novel, by Patjim Statovci

This month's selection is "Crossing: A Novel," by Patjim Statovci. The death of Communist Albania's head of state, Hoxha, and the loss of his father leave Bujar growing up in the ruins of his country and of his own family. Only his fearless best friend, Agim—who is facing his own realizations about his gender and sexuality—gives him hope for the future. Together the two decide to leave everything behind and try their luck in Italy. But the struggle to feel at home—in a foreign country and even in one's own body—will have corrosive effects, spurring a dangerous search for new identities. Steeped in a rich heritage of bewitching Albanian myth and legend, this is a deeply timely and deeply necessary novel about the broken reality for millions worldwide, about identity in all its complex permutations, and the human need to be seen.
