8:00pm - 8:30pm Q & A, Networking and Close

Talk #1: The History of Metrics According to Me

Abstract:

Metrics and monitoring are a time honored tradition for any engineering discipline. It is how we ensure the systems we use are working the way we expect. If this is a time honored tradition, why is it not a built into every piece of software we create, from the ground up? With software engineering, usually the trick to solving anything is to make it easier. By solving the hard parts of application metrics in Docker, we should make it more likely that metrics are a part of your services from the start.

Speaker Biography:

Stephen (https://twitter.com/stevvooe) is a Software Engineer at Docker. His many contributions to Docker ecosystem projects include evolving the available models for container image distribution, SwarmKit and the version 2 specification for the Docker Registry HTTP API. He currently works on the Core team at Docker and as a maintainer of the OCI Image Specification.

Talk #2: OpenTracing Isn't Just Tracing: Measure Twice, Instrument Once

Abstract:

The OpenTracing project provides a standard, portable API for distributed tracing instrumentation. In this talk, Ben will begin by describing OpenTracing and explaining why anyone who monitors microservices should care about it. Having laid that groundwork, the talk will step back to examine the historical role of operational logging and metrics in distributed system monitoring, then illustrate how the OpenTracing API maps to these tried-and-true abstractions. There will also be a demo involving donuts, distributed traces, and prometheus monitoring (all via OpenTracing).

Speaker Biography:

Ben Sigelman is the CoFounder and CEO of LightStep where he's building reliability management for modern systems. As an expert in distributed tracing, he is a leading proponent of the OpenTracing standard. In the past he built Dapper, Google's production distributed systems tracing infrastructure.

Lightening Talk: Using play-with-docker

Abstract:

Play With Docker is a Docker playground that was build by two amazing Docker captains: Marcos Nils (https://twitter.com/marcosnils) and Jonathan Leibiusky (https://twitter.com/xetorthio) during the Docker Distributed Systems Summit in Berlin last October. Play with Docker (https://github.com/franela/play-with-docker/) (aka PWD) gives you the experience of having a free Alpine Linux Virtual Machine in the cloud where you can build and run Docker containers and even create clusters with Docker features like Swarm Mode. Under the hood DIND or Docker-in-Docker is used to give the effect of multiple VMs/PCs. In this talk Marcos and Jonathan will explain how they built it, explain all the new features etc.

Speaker Biographies:

Marcos Nils (https://twitter.com/marcosnils) is Head of Research and Development at Mantika. He is an OS evangelist and Golang lover and has s strong background in distributed systems and app architecture. He is currently working in a Machine Learning startup that brings the latest in research to the industry.

Jonathan Leibiusky (https://twitter.com/xetorthio) is CTO at Mantika where they use Docker engine and compose to deploy machine learning microservices products in AWS.
