Skeptics on the Fringe:Hazel Gibson-Living On A Frack-tured Earth

Details

Speaker

Hazel Gibson is a PhD student at the University of Plymouth, studying geocognition – the science of what people know about geology. She previously worked as an Engineering Geologist in Brisbane and a Ranger at Mt St Helens, before moving to the Natural History Museum to work with school groups and the public, teaching them about geology, and doing the Earth Sciences identifications (always fun!).

Talk

Hazel will look at what people know about fracking (or hydraulic fracturing) from a number of perspectives, first – what fracking is – the process, what it is used for and why it is used. Second – why might people have heard of it, why it is negatively perceived and the influence of the media and thirdly – what people who are faced with the prospect of fracking think about it and what their concerns really are.
