Skeptics on the Fringe:Adventures in Menstruating with Chella Quint

The women of Edinburgh Skeptics embody the bloody-minded independence at the heart of skepticsm, so we’re delighted to bring Chella’s work to everyone in our audience, regardless of gender, after we saw her at last year’s Fringe.

What is that blue stuff… and why isn’t it red? Will all the menstruators performing at the Fringe really synchronise cycles? And how can ads from 100 years ago still affect attitudes now? Join Chella Quint, science comedian and menstrual researcher, on her Adventures in Menstruating.

As heard on Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, Chella uses humour and history to explore myths, facts, marketing messages and reusable menstrual products in this interactive and popular performance lecture for menstruators and non-menstruators of all genders.

It’s everything you never knew you needed to know about periods, and it’s bloody funny.

Chella Quint (http://chellaquint.carbonmade.com/) is a comedian, artist and education researcher from Brooklyn, New York who now lives in Sheffield.

She frequently performs science communication comedy in the UK and abroad; she hosted the live-streaming Comedy Collider show, No cause for conCERN (http://lhcomedy.web.cern.ch/), from Geneva in June 2014 and compered the closing event for the Manchester Science Festival last November. She regularly hosts Comedy in Space, a recurring comedy show featuring funny women in physics.

Chella is the founder of #PeriodPositive (http://periodpositive.wordpress.com/), a growing network of people committed to open and honest talk about menstruation that challenges taboos and changes the public discourse for the better. Chella uses comedy, product design and DIY culture to jam current narratives in Western media. As part of this she developed spoof fashion line STAINS™ (http://www.stainstm.com/) which was featured last winter in the highly acclaimed BLOOD exhibition at Science Gallery, Dublin.

Last year she completed a Master’s Degree in Education focusing on changing attitudes to menstruation in secondary schools, and she continues to test and develop classroom resources through DECSY’s Gender Respect project.

Her comedy fanzine Adventures in Menstruating turns ten years old this summer and to celebrate she’s performing the live version at Fringe Venue 175 at 7:30 pm throughout the festival. Check the PBH Free Fringe Guide for details.

This is because they are part of PBH's Free Fringe and are Free and un-ticketed. Come early, seating is limited and we have to turn people away most nights.

Details are here on Meetup and on our main website. If there are any changes to our published speakers, we will try to send an email to anyone whose said they're be attending, but please check online for changes.

All events start at 7.50 pm prompt and last for 1 hour (with discussions in the bar afterwards). We will try to include a couple of questions in the hour long talk but this may not be possible.

Please note that these restrictions, the timeslot, and the venue are out-with our realistic control, and we apologise for any inconvenience.

The queue for our talks runs from the front door of the Banshee up Niddry Street towards the High Street. Come early to avoid disappointment, we have to turn people away most nights. Committee members will have a "COMMITTEE" lanyard and other people involved in putting the talk on will have a "VOLUNTEER" lanyard.

We ask for donations at the end of each talk to cover our speakers' expenses and our publicity and other costs throughout the Fringe and the rest of the year. Edinburgh Skeptics is funded entirely by the generosity of the people who come to the talks and is only made possible by the speakers and volunteers who freely give up their time.
