Ed Sci Fest Event: You can keep your chickens, Mr Trump... - Dr Clare Taylor
Antibiotic resistance is a hot topic and the focus of much research and media attention. However, a recent study by the Wellcome Trust found that 44% of the public thought that they did not have a good understanding of what it meant, and that almost a third of people (31%) thought it meant that actual people were resistant to antibiotics. We'll explore what we mean when we talk about the 'antibiotic apocalypse', and why we really don't want Mr Trump's chickens on our supermarket shelves.
Clare is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Microbiology in the School of Applied Sciences and is also the current General Secretary of the Society for Applied Microbiology. Her research field is in medical microbiology, particularly the understanding of how some bacteria co-ordinate responses in the host. This has led her to explore ways in which bacteria can be inhibited to reduce infection, which does not rely on antibiotics, or to exploit bacterial pathways to deliver therapies to host cells. Clare is a public engagement enthusiast and is passionate about engaging people with research in microbiology especially on the topics of antimicrobial therapy and antibiotic resistance.
