What we’re about
This meetup is for all those interested in the Rationality or Effective Altruism communities.
The Rationality community is concerned with self improvement, decision making, and overcoming bias. Here's a quick primer.
Effective Altruism is a movement that focuses on making our altruistic efforts as impactful as possible. For more information, visit our website!
Everyone is welcome! Even if you aren't already familiar with these communities, or think you aren't a "typical" Rationalist/EA, or if you think you would be awkward or "not smart enough", please don't hesitate to join! We'd love to have you.
This is primarily a social group for like-minded people. We have a book club and periodic movie nights, outings, and we celebrate a secular Summer/Winter solstice together. However, we also try to apply the above principles to improve the world in whatever small way we can.

KC Secular Solstice 2025
RSVP here to stay up to date.
The Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year, ushering in an evening of cold and dark. To our ancestors, it marked the deepest point of a season that killed many. Thanks to the power of science and community, it has now become little more than an inconvenience. It also represents the light's return; tonight is the darkest it gets. Tomorrow's dawn brings with it the return of longer days. In these ways, the solstice metaphorically represents the other kinds of darkness and challenges in the world - past, present, and future - and our responsibility to rise and meet them to make tomorrow brighter than today.
We will begin with a vegan potluck dinner, followed by a 90-minute program of music and prose about the history of humanity, science, existential risk, and community. Think of it like a small theatrical journey involving music to sing along to and some simple optional activities to help involve you in the narrative. The musical portion will feature a special guest: Mari and the Music! (@MariAndTheMusic)
The event itself is free, and we will have free vegan hot cocoa available.
Please bring vegan food (no drinks), potluck-style! Vegan means no animal products whatsoever; no meat, gelatin, dairy, eggs, honey, etc.
There will be other drinks from a full service barista available for purchase.
Well-behaved children are all welcome to attend, but please be mindful of any noise they start to make.
We are holding this at the 'Arts on Broadway' event space, located inside Post Coffee company.
