Tonight is opportunity for complete beginners to come and learn to play Canasta as well as for those who have played before. Canasta is a fascinating and very “more-ish” card game that is played in teams of two against two. There is a high degree of strategy needed once you have mastered the rules which makes it, one of the best card games ever devised. Each game plays very differently from the previous one. One of the reason for Canasta’s popularity is its use of wild cards, which make the game high scoring and unpredictable. Canasta is one of the few partnership games where players can work in unison. It can be competitive but a lot of fun too. I ask for a £1 contribution to cover my time and costs in running the group. Please arrive in time for a 7 pm start. Parking in the Southgate Hotel car park is expensive but you can park for free along Southernhay East and West, and in Magdalen Car Park.

The weather looks good for Bank Holiday Monday so I thought I'd issue an impromptu invitation for people to come down to Sidmouth (where I live). It's a beautiful seaside resort easily accessible from Exeter (about 40 mins drive, 50 mins on the frequent bus service). Bank holiday Monday is a Sunday service https://www.stagecoachbus.com/routes/south-west/9a/seaton-or-honiton-exeter/xdao009a.i The first bus from Exeter to Sidmouth is 8.31am, and they continue about hourly throughout the day - do check for times (rest of the week they are half-hourly). Last bus back is 22.45. There's plenty to do here - the obvious beach & ice-cream options but also varied shops, the lovely Connaught Gardens etc. It's a short drive or bus ride (£1 each way, Sidmouth hopper bus) to The Donkey Sanctuary https://www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/visit-us/sidmouth The Hopper bus also goes up to Mutters Moor, and from there it's an hour long walk to Landram Bay http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/RoutesLinksWalks/sidmouth-to-ladram-bay-walking-route Also for the more athletic there's Jurassic Paddle Sports - paddleboarding and kayaking - more details on facebook and also you can phone them if you have any queries re pricing, etc https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g190743-d4322124-Reviews-Jurassic_Paddle_Sports-Sidmouth_Devon_England.html#REVIEWS My rough plan is to host officially for 3 hours[masked]pm and then people can do their own thing. Obviously people are free to arrive earlier (or later) and make independent arrangements to see if anyone would like to meet via posting on the event page). I might be able to get down earlier/stay later but I've got work I need to catch up on over the weekend so I don't want to commit to more now. I'll post a meeting place and contact details nearer the time.
