Everyone’s talking about “Big Data”, but what is it exactly? Why is “data scientist” the sexiest job of the 21st century, according to Harvard Business Review (https://hbr.org/2012/10/data-scientist-the-sexiest-job-of-the-21st-century/)? And how do I become one? We’ll demystify data science and describe the things that data scientists do, with concrete examples, information about the data scientists’ toolkit (Python, R, Hadoop, etc), and discussion.
You’ll learn about:
Exploratory data analysis
You’ve got a bunch of data. Now what? What do you do with it? Where do you start?
Predictive analytics and machine learning
You’d like to predict whether customer activity is fraudulent? What are the steps?
A/B testing
Your company is trying to increase click-through rates, and is trying to determine if a red banner drives more clicks than a blue one. How is this done?
Data communication and visualization
This is one of the most important but under-talked-about aspects of data science. How do you best present your analyses to drive action?
This workshop will be taught by Sara Bates and Diana Pfeil, both data scientists and data fanatics. Sara is a co-founder and data scientist at Bates Analytics, a consulting group that develops custom, scalable machine learning solutions. Diana works at OptTek Systems in predictive analytics and optimization, has a Ph.D. in applied math and has previously worked in the machine learning group at Amazon.com.
