Ladies Hack Hangout: Preview for HackVT
Hosted by Girl Develop It Burlington
Details
Girl Develop It is a charity sponsor of HackVT (http://hackvt.com/) and we want to help more women get involved in tech via this annual climate change inspired hackathon. All skill sets are welcome! Hackathon teams need folks with a range of skills: coding, writing, content strategy, graphic design, user experience design, and (maybe most of all) presentation skills.
During this workshop, we will talk about the benefits of getting involved in a hackathon, and veteran (lady) pros will share their tips and tricks for making the most out of participating in a hackathon. We will take a look at the newly revealed data sets for HackVT (http://hackvt.com/), and maybe even form a few teams for the hackathon, occurring October 9th and 10th.
Here is a preview of the ladies who will share with us their experience at a hackathon and work in small groups with you on how your skills and experience connects to hackathon teams.
Meagan Van Woert is a Sales Engineer with Dealertrack Technologies, as well as a web development and design consultant in her own business. Meagan is also an active volunteer in the community, who loves to spend time outdoors and is fully vested in mentoring others for their own personal growth and opportunities within the Digital Marketing Industry.
Rebecca Grenier is a Senior Developer working for the University of Vermont Dept. of Communications. She is a two-time participant of the Vermont Hackathon, forming their first all-womens team "Becky and the Hackettes," who took 2nd place in the 2013 hackathon. In the above picture you'll find Becky with her team that placed in HackVT 2013, Meagan Van Woert was also on her team!
Rachael Arnold’s title at Dealer.com is Scrum Master, but she still crafts HTML, Javascript, and CSS/Sass whenever her team needs it. Prior to working on automotive sites, she spent quite a few years building sites for small and medium-sized businesses, non-profits, and local clubs from start to finish (or from database to PHP to front-end to design), often with WordPress.
Pizza will be covered by the admission fee for this event.
