Panel: Women in Open Source

Open Source is a great way to find your community and get embedded in a public-facing software project! Come hear from women in open source about how they evaluate open source projects, how folks can dive into new code bases, and learn some best practices for contribution.

SPEAKERS

Moderator: Hanah Yendler is a pirate historian turned food educator turned software engineer. When not happily hacking away at Eventbrite, she teaches code and swing dance (but not at the same time, that would be silly). Hanah is passionate about accessibility and approachability in education and spends time contributing to GDI’s open source curriculum. She is stoked to be moderating this panel.

Alyssa Kwan is a long-time open source contributor to a variety of projects, from programming languages and compilers to core backend services. She is a co-founder and the CTO of Infallisys, a new startup building an all-in-one, end-to-end platform to empower data science and analytics. She has 14 years of experience in engineering around data, with another 3 years across high-scale back-end, front-end, and devops. Over the past 4 years, she has been building out data teams from scratch. She has long had limited time to contribute to open source, so she is keenly focused on maximizing the impact of her time spent, and is highly selective in how she invests her time.

Liz Howard is an engineer and manager of 16 years. Liz has been a teacher at Girl Develop It since 2012, where she got started with open-source contribution, and she has been contributing to open-source ever since. After she got started teaching with Girl Develop It, she helped found Hackbright Academy, and built engineering courses at Tradecraft and Galvanize. Now she's the CTO at Enki.com. Truc Nguyen is a engineer by training turned generalist designer. She is a Senior Product Designer with a technical bent at Unity Technologies. She first got started contributing to open source through creating new curriculum for Girl Develop It and is now a maintainer for GDI SF's teaching-materials.org repo. She also volunteers as a front-end engineer on ShelterTech, helping build the most reliable, up-to-date online database of services available to homeless and underserved communities in San Francisco. Outside of work she enjoys being active through various fitness activities and also loves baking, cats, and empowering women.

Frances Coronel is a developer with a design background who gets a lot of personal satisfaction out of helping the local tech community through her varied skill set. She is currently a Software Engineer at Slack at their headquarters in San Francisco, having previously worked and interned at Accenture's Liquid Studio as a software engineer and AR/VR developer. Her passions outside of work include contributing to open-source, blogging about her adventures in tech, and traveling with her partner using Airbnb.
