What we're about

We are world travelers who are passionate about cultural exchange, authentic and responsible travel, global adventure, life-changing experiences, unforgettable personal stories, slow travel, green travel and savvy travel on a budget. If you're as addicted to world travel as we are, or are interested in embarking on the life-long adventure towards fulfillment that we embrace as essential to our existence, you'll enjoy this group.

Join us for one of our many upcoming events, hook up with other members to plan a trip, or just relax on a social outing and share travel tips and stories with fellow adventurers. We have a monthly free Global Travel Social where travelers just come out and chat sharing stories and inspiration. We have a monthly free Talk Travel Meetup which has a travel theme. There are also Special Presentations on travel that may be free or may have a cost depending on venue. Plus, there are Travel Classes that, as the name implies are actual classes on how-to travel (tuition varies based on venue & length of class.)

This group is sponsored by Wild Spirit Travel and by Servas an International, non-profit, travel group. It promotes world peace through travel. When traveling, Servas members can be home hosted around the world. This enables Servas members to make global friends and garner a true understanding of diverse societies.

If you are in the travel industry feel free to come to our meetups, but please no sales or pushing of tours either at meetups or in posts to this group. Instead, come meet the organizers and become a regular member. Once, active, you may be able to do a presentation. This group is about meeting up and learning about travel from each other. If you are not in the area, this is probably not the group for you. Thanks.

Photos taken at meetups/classes/event may be used by Shyla & Dan Bare, meetup organizers, or the sponsors, Wild Spirit Travel and Servas, in social media, websites, or print. They may promote future meetups, travel talks/classes, or general Wild Spirit Travel / Servas activities. By attending an event listed in this group you give consent to be in photos. Any photo uploaded to the group by a member must be their own work and one they have the right to share. Once uploaded to this meetup group, the organziers/sponsors may use.

Talk Travel - Down Under

McMenamins Broadway Pub

$5.00

As fall approaches here, it is spring in the Southern Hemisphere. This is a delightful time to travel "Down Under." As such, this month we will focus on Australia and New Zealand. If you dream of traveling to these countries, come find out what they are like from travelers who have visited both as well as lived in Oz. If you have been to these countries come share stories and travel tips. This will be a facilitated discussion among attendees, with lots of opportunities to ask questions. Talk Travels are free, however, all attendees are asked to donate $5 to cover meetup costs and buy the speakers a drink. This month, we are at McMenamins on Broadway. This room does have an attendance limit. Please only sign up for this if you plan to attend AND, put it on your calendar. We anticipate a wait-list so it is very important that everyone honors the RSVP system. Also, please order food and/or drink from the server for our room. We do need to reach minimum purchases in order to not have a room fee. Speakers/Facilitators: Paul Grandjean is a member of our meetup group, an experienced world traveler, and a fine art photographer. Before the talk, he will be sharing photos of his trip to New Zealand. On Paul's website, he says "I enjoy sharing my photos with others, especially when I know a particular photo has helped someone connect with a place from their past experiences or future dreams." https://paulgrandjeanphotography.com/ Shyla and Dan Bare lived in the Gold Coast of Australia. Their home was in Mermaid Beach. From there, they explored the east coast of Oz, as well as visited New Zealand twice. They also did an epic three month drive around Australia which ended in Perth. One of the travel classes they teach at local colleges is "Australia for Travelers." It is through their company Wild Spirit Travel (www.WildSpiritTravel.com) Photos taken at the event may be used by Shyla & Dan Bare, or Wild Spirit Travel, in social media, websites, or print. Talk Travel - Voluntourism

Needs a location

$4.00

Voluntourism is defined as "the act or practice of doing volunteer work as needed in the community where one is vacationing." It has been an increasingly popular way to travel. This month we are going to have a panel discussion on voluntourism -- looking at the when it helps, when it doesn't, and what it is like for a traveler on a voluntourism trip. We will also hear from three tour operators/guides that specialize in voluntourism. They are: Andrew Rivinus with Habitat for Humanity, who leads builds around the world; David Krier of Volunteer Voyages, who enriches lives through humanitarian service adventures, and Brad Nahill of See Turtles, who protects endangered sea turtles through unique conservation and volunteer trips. Find out how their trips are improving the areas they go to and changing the world for the better. Talk Travels meetups are free, however, all attendees are asked to donate $5 to cover meetup costs and buy the volunteer speakers a drink. Also, please plan to buy food and/or drink to support the venue. Our venues rotate throughout the greater Portland area. This month we will be at Fika in North Portland. We will have the entire restaurant just for our group. For this, I do need an accurate headcount. Please, only sign up if you plan to attend and put the event on your calendar. If something comes up and you can no longer attend, please go to the meetup website and switch change your RSVP to a no. Thanks, it really does help when people honor the RSVP system.
