JPEG ("jay-peg") is the most common format for images on the internet. It is a "lossy" compression format particularly suited for digital photography because it keeps the information the human eye is most sensitive to and drops the rest. 10x compression ratios can be achieved with little noticeable difference in image quality. Norm will explain how this is possible.

Norm is retired from Xerox PARC NY where he worked on image compression. He may bring examples of compression hardware he developed.
Topics: Compression, Algorithms, JPEG, Math
Skill/Knowledge Level: Intermediate to Advanced. Norm will cover topics like Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrete_cosine_transform#Example_of_IDCT) and some inner details of compression. Bring your thinking caps and your questions!
Note: This will be a joint meeting with ACM Greenville (https://www.meetup.com/ACM-Greenville/).
