MakerMap: Map-a-thon!

Hey Guys,

Since we've been getting so many requests for where to find local hardware resources (materials/parts suppliers, manufacturers, freelancers, etc.) - we're finally going to do something about it!

This coming Monday (July 30th) at O'Reilly Alpha Tech Ventures we're going to build the initial "MakerMap" - which will be an online / interactive map of the hardware resources in the Bay Area.

If you're interested helping out - here's what we're looking for:

  • Attend as a Web Developer / Designer - You'll be a on a small team working with either the Google Maps or MapBox API to make the basic map app.
  • Attend as a Resource Expert - Have you been building stuff in the Bay Area for a long time, and would like to share your knowledge of local resources? We need you to come out to help us populate this thing! We're looking for diverse experts: industrial design, fabric/soft goods, electronics, arts, etc. are all welcome.
  • Contribute as a Resource Expert - Can't make the date? You can still help us by sharing your list of reliable local Bay Area resources!

If you want to come as any of these categories, please let me know right away so we can add you to the list. This is initially a closed event so that we get people with the most knowledge in the space first - it's hard to manage 100 people at a hack-a-thon.

Let me know what you think guys!

- Nick

It was a good initial experience. The intent is to share and integrate...

It was a little loose - I arrived late, though. I got to contribute both by offering content and by participating in discussion of hashtags and taxonomy.

I want to partecipate in order to offer the possibility to transform this map in a native app for iphone and android. I am the CEO of, the easiest way to create mobile travel guides. Check out our website and see how easy it is to create an app with map2app. For this event, we will provide the service for free.

I'd love to see a map include several different classes of business:
retail, new (e.g. Fry's Electronics, Radio Shack, Jameco Electronics)
retail, surplus/salvage (e.g. HSC, Anchor -- by the way, note the hazard of potentially designing-in obsolete components)
    distributors (e.g. Arrow)
    assemblers (e.g. Tanon Manufacturing)
    fabricators (PCB, metal shops)

I'd also like to include catalog/mail order resources such as Digi-Key, Arrow, Newark, and ExpressPCB.
