What: Come bag San Jac (10,834') via Devil's Slide & enjoy the remaining snow up high. We'll travel to the charming mountain town of Idyllwild to very briefly stop/regroup @ the Forest Service office (7:45 AM ish) for a permit before driving together from there a short distance on to Humber Park / Devil's Slide Trailhead (8:15 AM ish - note: bring your Forrest Adventure Pass for parking IF you have one as it's required there) where we'll hike an "out & back" route that's mostly on trail with a bit of snow up higher going up the Devil's Slide trail (starting around 8:30 AM ish) to first Wellman's Divide & then up to San Jacinto Peak (10,834') where we'll stop for a long lunch break & to enjoy the great 360 degree views. Then hike back down the same way. This mountain hike at altitude is designed to give us a fairly straight forward but enjoyable day "out n' about" to enjoy the remaining snow & acclimate for future mountain hikes in SoCal and the Sierra's. Details: This mostly on trail hike (with a bit of snow travel up higher) is approximately 16 miles long with around 5,000' of elevation gain (uphill). Estimated hiking time is around 8:30 AM - 7:00 PM with a long lunch break at San Jac peak to have some food, enjoy the views,& check out the people. Optional dinner stop in Idyllwild afterwards for those interested.
Bring: either a minimum of 3 - 4 quarts or liters of H2O with electrolytes depending on how much you drink or 1.5 liters & a water filter for Wellmans Cienega; snacks to eat WHILE MOVING; "real food" for the long early afternoon lunch break at San Jac peak; some layers for the likely wind up high (wind breaker or light jacket or fleece or down, beanie, gloves, etc.); hat / sunglasses / sunscreen, a headlamp (extremely unlikely we'll finish after dark, but always good to have just in case), any first aid items you might need (drugs, etc), hiking poles with snow baskets attached will help with the remaining snow up high & gaiters can be helpful for keeping snow out of boots, microspikes are optional - you may want them if you have them for a bit more traction; etc. Pre-hydrate by drinking ahead of time all day Fri. & again in the AM Sat. for breakfast & on the drive out to the hike.
My hiking style: we'll mostly stay together as a group for both camaraderie & safety; we snack & drink WHILE WE MOVE except for short bathroom breaks or pics as necessary; I'll take a long break (1 hr?) at San Jacinto peak to eat "real food" / enjoy the 360 view in the early afternoon; I prefer to hike at a steady / bit faster than average pace if possible depending on what the group can do.
