Hike the Dolomites in Italy via the Alta Via One Route August 3th- 15th 2020 or longer if you want to stay in Italy !
Informational meeting held at RT Rodger Brewing Co. (on the patio) @ 38 East Montecito Ave, Sierra Madre, 91024. Very convenient to several hikes in the area!
This write up is to tell you enough about the trip so you can make a decision to come to the informational meeting or not.
Disclosure: I am not a travel company or professional tour guide, & am not profiting from this trip. My time is 100% volunteering. Consider this just a long hike w friends in Italy. I have simply done MUCH research & planning, have a tremendous amount of travel experience, and have hiked multi day hikes in Europe before.
Where, When and How long:
The Dolomites are in Northern Italy on the border with Austria. The Alta Via 1 or High Route trail is the most beautiful and easiest of the many Alta via routes. It is 85 miles long or 57 hrs of hiking which we will do over 9 days. This total mileage does not include variants and extra hikes if we choose.
You will need to be away from the States from August 3rd-15th at a minimum and you can extend your trip in Italy to site see if you like. The start date cannot be changed so read no further if the dates are not doable for you. The international arrival airport we will use is Venice/VCE.
While on the trail we will stay in Italian mountain huts called Refugios that provide breakfast, dinner, beds, blankets and showers and we will stay in 2-3 star hotels pre and post trip. Beer, water, wine and lunch for the next day (brown bag) are sold at all Refugios. Also, lunch can be bought at other Refugios along the trail.
You will be carrying all your luggage in a backpack from hut to hut. I do not consider this a real backpack as your pack will be light (22lbs) you do not have to bring bedding, stoves, food or tents. I will guide you on what to bring.
About the trail: The trail is well marked and popular. Afternoon rainstorms- like the Sierras- do occur on occasion and on even rarer occasion snow has popped up. Usually, it will be warm.
Max altitude reached is 9050 feet, max amount of gain in one day is 4250k, but mostly just[masked]k. Max loss about 5000k. Max mileage in one day is 12 m but usually daily mileage is 6-10. Again this is w/o side trips. We will be hiking every day for 9 days w no off day.
If 9 days hiking is too much for you. You can leave the states on Aug 6 or 7 and make your way to us in route on Aug 8th from the city of Cortina-using bus and cable car to Refugio Lagazoui. This cuts off 3 days of hiking.
Passport w at least 6 months on it at time of trip. Be a confident, healthy, strong, independent hiker and have the ability to hike several days in a row w a light pack. A relaxed, kind, helpful, open minded, attitude is essential as we are in another country with a different culture and language lastly-be willing to follow directions for your & the groups safety.
Travel health insurance for the 9 days on the trail is highly recommended and it should include coverage for hiking accidents and coverage to helicopter you out to a hospital and fly you home.
ESTIMATED COSTS:[masked] US for eco RT flt Lax to VCE as of this am for MY dates-yours may be more and $[masked] for, lodging, food, drinks & transport for a 14 day trip.
You will be responsible for purchasing your own flights, etc and making your own hut reservations-again I will guide you. Re Pre and post lodging-we will discuss in person. Doubling up will save $.
Small PRINT : You must be ok with the fact that Refugios are SIMPLE European lodging with bathrooms down the hall and most have dorm rooms with bunks. Dorm accommodation is mixed gender. The Refugios require cash up front to save your spot and do not refund if you bail.
Please Note-I cannot answer any questions on email regarding this event and this is the ONLY meeting.
