A long weekend, because it's worth it! Two nights in a rather luxurious mountain hut (yes the one in the picture) with outdoor hot tub; one spectacular hike over a 80m high hanging bridge, one spectacular hike to a 3.000m+ high summit! On top of all that, delicious artisanal cheese fondue :) We gather Friday afternoon* in Blatten bei Naters (VS) (bus from Brig), hike one hour up to the hut (luggage will be brought by car). In the evening a cheese fondue like you never had before! (there is also a vegan dish possible). Saturday after breakfast we make a hike (T3) of around 7 hours with as highlight the crossing of a 124m long and 80m high hanging bridge! Then in the evening another fine dinner and then we can enjoy the outdoor Hot Tub. So don't forget your swim wear. Sunday we'll have breakfast early and then we'll hike up to the Sparrhorn, a 3.020m high peak (T3, at moments exposed) with amazing views over the immense glaciers of the Aletsch area. The hiking program can change depending on weather and local conditions. The hikes are done without a mountain guide and it's up to you to make sure that you can do these kind of hikes. However it is also possible to so less challenging hikes by yourself and still enjoy the time together in the hut! The cost of participation in this trip is CHF 190 or EUR 175. This covers Fondue (or vegan dish) on Friday evening, breakfast and dinner on Saturday, breakfast on Sunday, two nights in our private hut, tourist taxes, luggage transport to/from the hut (see also "The hut, sleeping arrangement" below). I will ask you for an advance payment because I have to confirm the booking of the hut and I have to arrange the food. All the beds that have not been reserved in that way, will be distributed randomly. *If you want to avoid taking time off from work on Friday: the 18:02 train from Zürich would work as well - you'll miss out on the fondue, but I will probably pick you up by car from the bus station in Blatten bei Naters - this will save you the one hour walk to the hut. Let's have this amazing mountain experience together! Join! This event is confirmed; meaning that unless there is a civil war in Switzerland or a complete lockdown, the event will take place. In order to comply with the cantonal regulations, this event is spilt into two groups of max. 10 people: each group will have a separate dorm building with their own showers/toilets; each group will have its own dining space, the groups will hike separately and each group will have a separate time frame for using the hot tub.
Last hiking weekend of the season, let's do it on the sunny side of the Alps! We will stay in a nice mountain house (to nice to call it a hut) 700m above the Lago Maggiore. The hikes that we will be making on Saturday and Sunday will take us to some 1.500m of altitude and will offer us incredible views on the Lago Maggiore and on the higher peaks of the Alps. Hikes are T2/T3. Saturday evening, after a day of hiking, we will enjoy a fantastic artisanal cheese fondue (vegan dish also available if you prefer). After that we'll sleep in the dorms of our mountain house. And then on Sunday we'll experience that wonderful feeling of waking up high on the mountain! It will totally motivate us for another day of hiking :) The cost of participation in this trip is CHF 140 or EUR 130. This covers Fondue (or vegan dish) on Saturday evening, breakfast on Sunday, one night in our private house, tourist taxes. I will ask you for an advance payment because I have to confirm the booking of the hut and I have to arrange the food. Should I cancel the event, you will get a full refund. ~HOW CAN YOU JOIN~ First RSVP to this event here on Meetup :) Then I will send you a Meetup message with info about how to pay, cancellation policy etc. ~WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING WITH YOU~ -The regular hiking stuff: suitable hiking boots, rain jacket, daypack, water container etc -Lunch for Saturday and Sunday -Any snacks and alcoholic beverages that you might want -YOUR OWN CUP OR MUG FOR DRINKING that is easy recognizable. You will be only this cup/mug for drinking! And a hand sanitizer. ~COVID-19 PROTOCOL~ will be sent to you together with the payment info. We need a minimum of 10 participants for this event to take place. Join this beautiful closing of the hiking season!
A mountain weekend like no other! Saturday morning (Dec. 19) we start with a training in avalanche safety (avalanche risk assessment, using avalanche transceiver/LVS, probe and shovel), make a beautiful guided snowshoe tour to the hut where we will stay overnight. Saturday evening a delicious cheese fondue (real artisanal one, not a pre-made one from the supermarket - vegan dish available if you prefer) and a cosy sleepover in this amazing hut high on the mountain. Then on Sunday (Dec. 20) we have breakfast and then we make another snow shoe tour and eventually go back to the village in the afternoon. ABOUT THE AVALANCHE SAFETY TRAINING This is relevant for anyone that ever goes off trail/off piste in winter, be it as a skier, snowboarder or snowshoe hiker. An experienced trainer and mountain guide will teach us about how to assess the risk of avalanches, considering amongst others snow conditions, weather conditions, steepness and exposition of the slope etc. Also we will be instructed (and train) how to use the LVS (avalanche transceiver), how to use the probe to find someone in an avalanche, and how to get that person out of it. This training is super interesting and it feels great to explore the winter mountains with this knowledge! ABOUT THE ACCOMMODATION It is a simple wooden hut as one would expect at this altitude (1.900m) with a wood stove for heating and cooking. There is a dorm with bunk beds. The real alpine experience! The hut is just for our group. ABOUT THE LOCATION We will be in the Surselva area of Grisons, between Chur and Disentis. No mass tourism and cable cars; still easily reached by car or train. ABOUT THE PARTICIPATION FEE If you want to partake in this weekend, you'll have to pay a fee of EUR 175 or CHF 195. This includes the avalanche safety training, dinner on Saturday evening, breakfast on Sunday morning, one night in the mountain hut. Please notice that this is hardly more than the usual price for just an avalanche safety training in Switzerland! You get the fondue, the night in the hut and the second day almost for free :) I will ask you for an advance payment of EUR/CHF 100 when you sign up. ABOUT WEATHER CONDITIONS -Under normal circumstances we can follow the program as described above. -In the unlikely situation that there would not be enough snow to do the avalanche safety training at this location, we will still hike to and stay in the hut, however we will do the training at another location such as the Lukmanier pass where we would drive to by car. -In the unlikely situation that the avalanche risk is to high to stay in the hut, we will stay in an alternative accommodation -In the extremely unlikely situation that there is so little snow that the training can not even be done at an alternative location, we will simply be hiking, and our mountain guide will show us about the amazing winter survival techniques of the wild animals on the mountain. Still totally worth it :) ABOUT EQUIPMENT For this event you will need -Winter hiking clothes -Sturdy hiking boots -Snow shoes (can be rented on the spot for CHF 28 for the weekend) -Ski poles or hiking poles (can be rented on the spot for CHF 15 for the weekend) -Avalanche safety set consisting of LVS, probe and shovel (can be rented on the spot for CHF 40 for the weekend) Let's do this! Please send me (Klaas Couchista) a PM if you have any additional questions. If you set your RSVP to 'going', I will send you a PM with the details for the advance payment and cancellation policy. ~COVID-19 PROTOCOL~ will be sent to you together with the payment info.
Let's make Xmas 2020 unforgettable - in a positive way :) When everybody else goes back to cars and noise and towns... we stay on the mountain! Experience this amazing feeling as we will stay 3 nights high on the mountain in a beautiful, wel equipped mountain hut right at the ski slopes! A perfect place for skiing, snowboarding or other snowsports (see below). On Christmas Eve we'll enjoy a majestic artisanal cheese fondue (or vegan dish if you prefer) in our mountain cabin (that we have just for our group). And we'll sleep in that same cabin, so that we wake up every morning with an unspoiled sunrise and we'll be the first to hit the slopes again! We will be in the St.Luc/Chandolin ski resort in Valais, close to Sierre. A medium sized ski resort with lots of blues and reds, one or two blacks and a couple of ungroomed ski routes. The village is at 1.950m altitude; our hut at 2.300m and the highest ski lift goes up to 3.000m ! If you're not into skiing or snowboarding: the cabin is right at a 4 kilometer long toboggan run and there are hiking and snowshoe-hiking possibilities as well. Our hut has decent toilets and showers and electric heating. We will sleep dorm style in simple bunk beds. Because of COVID protocols, we will use only every second bed so there is always enough distance. The cost for this trip is CHF 285 / EUR 265 per person. This covers dinners and breakfasts, the rental of our private hut, and tourist taxes. I will ask you for an advance payment because I have to confirm the booking of the hut. Should I cancel the event, you will get a full refund. Should you cancel your participation, I will give you the full refund if I find someone else to take your place. If you cancel in the last 7 days before the event, I will deduce EUR/CHF 30 from the refund. Gear can be rented at at sports shop at 750m from the chair lift/meeting point. By the way, I set 11:00 as meeting time because that is when the bus arrives that you would take if you're in the 7:02 train from Zurich. If you want to start earlier, that's fine as well, we'll meet you at the cabin or you simply ski down to the meeting point. It's also fine if you want to arrive later; I'll meet you at a clear meeting point. Let's experience this amazing trip to snow wonderland together!
