Newseum: Photography & Photojournalism Exhibits + Optional Lunch

Details

The government shutdown gives us an opportunity to appreciate some of DC’s many historical and cultural sites that don’t receive federal funding. One of our favorites is the Newseum, with 7 floors of public spaces and numerous exhibits. There is so much to see and do that someone can easily spend a full day here.
During our group visit we’ll focus on Newseum exhibits related to photography and photojournalism. Your host Robert is a Newseum member and founder of the non-profit community organization Washington, DC History & Culture. This won’t be a full guided tour per se, but we’ll visit several of the exhibits together as a group, with an optional lunch discussion afterward.
Our tentative itinerary is provided below:

Pulitzer Prize Photographs Gallery
Level 1
9:10 - 10:00
This gallery - a visitor favorite - features the most comprehensive collection of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs ever assembled, including photographs from every Pulitzer Prize-winning entry since 1942, when the award was first presented.

Pictures of the Year: 75 Years of the World’s Best Photography
Level 6
10:00 - 10:30
“Pictures of the Year: 75 Years of the World’s Best Photography” is a groundbreaking photography show featuring seven decades of award-winning images from the archives of Pictures of the Year International (POYi), one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious photojournalism competitions.

The Marines and Tet
Level 2
10:30 - 11:00
On the 50th anniversary of the Tet Offensive, “The Marines and Tet: The Battle That Changed the Vietnam War” will showcase the work of John Olson, a young photographer with Stars and Stripes who spent three days with the Marines at the 1968 Battle of Huêˊ (pronounced hway), the bloodiest single battle of the Vietnam War.
