Yoga is a fun way for children to develop a variety of important skills in a nurturing, non-competitive environment. During a parent-child yoga class, there is a complete absence of judgement and competition. There is no pressure to master the "perfect" yoga pose. In this positive, encouraging environment, children learn to relax and have fun whilst developing strength, coordination, flexibility and balance, as well as increasing body awareness, concentration and self-esteem.
Children are encouraged to respect and pay attention to their bodies, making sure each pose feels good. This becomes an important skill as they grow and their bodies change. Having the skill to listen carefully to the body and heart is not just a method to avoid injury, but also makes it easier to be self-reflective and make good choices when dealing with peer pressure.
Children in this age group are advancing from infancy into their preschool years. During this time, there will be tremendous intellectual, social, and emotional changes. They learn best by imitating behavior of others and they love to be in the company of other children. They learn through and LOVE repetition like how young children like the same story read to them every night. Every class begins and ends the same way to promote familiarity. There will be visual props, yoga story time, yoga journeys and lots of singing and dancing! Quiet time (otherwise known as meditation in adult practice) will be practiced in every session.
