Let's go play on Matagorda beach! Matagorda Beach is dog friendly. Let's go play in the sand and the surf in Matagorda! The drive time to this beach is only about 20 minutes longer than if we were to visit the west end of Galveston Island, but it's much quieter with less tourists than Galveston. (Drivetimes compared from downtown Houston) Admission Fee: Purchase an annual Matagorda beach driving permit for $10.00/car at one of the local businesses. The sheriff WILL ticket your vehicle if you don't have a permit. We will be on the first 3 miles of beach - a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required to access much farther down the beach. We can park on the beach and access our stuff from our cars - basically wherever we have enough room to let the dogs run and play. I've found several first hand reports indicating that the state leash law is not enforced on Matagorda Beach - woohoo! I have been warned to watch for vehicle traffic on the beach. Don't forget to bring plenty of water for your pup and a long line. Why the long line if the leash law isn't enforced? Unless your dog has a PERFECT recall (comes when called every time), you will want a long line in case they stop paying attention to you. Plus - sometimes it's another person's unleashed dog that causes an issue. If this starts to happen, being able to put your dog on a long line will provide you some control over the situation. Matagorda is not a tourist destination but is a small coastal community. This means there are only a few places around to buy supplies. Be sure to bring what you need and be prepared to pack it all back out including your trash. Things to bring for you & your dog: • a leash and/or long line • whatever you need to play in the surf! • a water dish • plenty of water for you and your pup • food/snacks for you and your pup - let's plan on a picnic lunch. • sunscreen for you and your dog • towels for cleaning/drying you and your dog before getting back in the car. • fetch toys for your pup • shade for you and your pup (umbrella, pop up canopy, etc) if you don't have a canopy, I HIGHLY recommend this one: I have one of these and it works great. • first aid kit for you and your pup

HAD Members enjoy meeting and getting together with their social canine companions! We meet at various locations - dog parks, dog-friendly restaurants taverns and events - around the Houston-area to allow our dogs to play and socialize, and to give us the opportunity to make new friends within the *HAD* Group. We are dedicated to the on-going well-being of our canine companions through socialization and recreation.
