Overnight Light Painting in an Abandoned Hospital, 2 Photowalks, 2 Museums

Yorktown Memorial Hospital was abandoned in the 1980's. Since then, it has been a spooky example of what happens to a building when humans are no longer around to care for it. It is two hospital floors, including ER, surgery rooms, a small jail, a church, and is filled with amazing texture, hospital artifacts, peeled paint, and ghosts of the past.

Although they offer brief daytime guided tours, the structure takes on a whole new life after the sun goes down and the hospital goes pitch black. We have rented the property for approximately 12 hours overnight. So bring your flashlights, photography flashes, and all your favorite light painting toys. We will have 2 stories of an abandoned hospital all to ourselves for about 12 hours!
Note: they raised their price since the last time we went. Although they charge a good bit for renting the location overnight, the photography opportunities are well worth it!
This event includes 2 small-town photowalks, a visit to the Pharmacy Museum of Texas, and overnight photography in the Yorktown Memorial Hospital! The Photowalk price covers the entry fee for overnight in the hospital and 2 photowalks.
LOGISTICS:
We will CARAVAN to each stop, starting at Bucc-ee's in Katy. We will drive to Cuero, Texas (about 2 hours) to photowalk the main street and the DeWitt County Courthouse. Our lunch location and the Pharmacy and Medical Museum is nearby too.
From there, we will visit Yorktown (and/or check into a hotel). Then have dinner at 5D Steakhouse. After dinner, we head to the hospital.
If you don't to get a hotel, I plan to sleep in a sleeping bag inside or outside the hospital before heading home.
Some people may prefer nicer accommodations. Yorktown, Texas has a couple of hotels. Having a nearby hotel room will be helpful if you want to leave the Hospital shoot before dawn. Also, there are no bathroom facilities in the hospital, or running water, or electricity, so having a nearby hotel room isn't a bad idea.

Note, because they only allow very small groups, this is a "photographers-only" event. No guests please.
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:
- The schedule may change throughout the day.
- All locations are "optional", if you want to spend more time in one place, or skip to something else, that's perfectly fine. Just catch up with us when you are ready.
9 AM: Caravan leaves from Buc-ee's in Katy. This is a good place to gas up and get some snacks. ( 27700 Katy Fwy, Katy, TX 77494 ). If driving to Katy from your location is out of the way, you can just meet us in Cuero, Texas at the courthouse.
11 AM: Photowalk Cuero and the DeWitt Courthouse Location ( 307 N Gonzales St, Cuero, TX 77954 )
12 PM: Lunch at Rosie's Mexican Restaurant ( 202 N Esplanade St, Cuero, TX 77954 )
1 PM: The Pharmacy Museum of Texas and Downtown Cuero ( 114 E Main St, Cuero, TX 77954 )
Leave Cuero whenever you are ready. Yorktown is about 30 minutes away from Cuero.
On-Your-Own: Visit Yorktown
- Please don't go to the Hospital without the group leader, it makes the folks at the hospital kinda cranky if we show up before the time slot we paid for. If you want to arrange a guided daytime tour, let me know and I'll find out that cost for you. Otherwise, wait for the photowalk organizer to lead you to the location at our set timeslot.
- Downtown has old architecture and textures on East Main Street.
