What we're about

The Indianapolis Writers’ Meetup group began in 2009. The founder had tried online groups and found them of little use, either because of lack of participation or the quality of the critiques. He also thought that the group should be free. The vast majority of writers make little money, and he didn’t feel people should pay if they were willing to trade critiques in kind. With no other local group filling that niche, the Indianapolis Writers Meetup was born.

We're proud to say we have had over a hundred different writers grace our door, with consistent meetings at least once per week for over ten years. Only major holidays and major winter snow storms have forced us to skip a meetup.

That’s because most of our writers are professionals. They have published or are looking to publish, either through traditional means or through the burgeoning self-publishing industry. When we critique, it’s with an eye toward what sells. That’s not to say we push our fellow writers toward conforming to what’s popular, but that we have experience with what the market looks for in quality.

We hate to say this, but Meetup charges us more if we have over fifty members in our group. We meet every Tuesday at 7:30 PM. If you are unable to fit this in your schedule please consider joining at a later time when you will be able to participate. Anyone who does not attend at least one meetup in a three-month period will be removed.

Weekly Writers' Critique Session

Link visible for attendees

The weekly gathering of the Indianapolis Writers Meetup. Everyone is invited. We ask that new members bring an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a dedication to the craft. Our group critiques the work of its members in order to better prepare that work for public consumption, whether through self-publishing or presentation to agents, publishers, or contests. We make each other better writers and we don't mess around while doing it.

Things have changed, as you well know. IWM has moved to virtual meetings for as long as is necessary. Same time, same day, every week.

If you would like to attend a critique session, email Steve at [masked] and let him know. You will be directed to the items for critique and to the link to meet online.

Meetings start at 7:30 PM (Eastern Daylight Time) and never go longer than 9:00 PM. An invite will be sent out to regular attendees and those who email Steve with an interest. This invite should arrive in your email Sunday morning.

Come, find your team. Friends and other loved ones are not enough of a sounding board for your writing. You need a good, honest, serious critique group, and this is it.
