Princeton, Einstein, Hamilton, Grover Cleveland, and the Temple of Doom Bridge

Princeton, Einstein, Hamilton, Grover Cleveland, and the Temple of Doom Bridge

Details

LENGTH/DIFFICULTY

  • THIS IS A LONG HIKE AND YOU MUST DO IT ALL AND YOU MUST BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH US. Estimate about 11-12 miles. Little to no elevation, but it's not 100% flat either
  • We keep a good 3.5mph (for flat areas) and 2.5mph (hills/elevation) pace. That's your judgment point or point of reference. You must keep up with us. Don't know your hiking speed? Go outside or jump on a treadmill. If you can do a mile in 17-20 minutes and keep that up for 5-6 hours with just a few short breaks, you can do this. Otherwise, this isn't the hike for you.

MEMBERSHIP

  • No guests, everyone must be a member of IBO for communication purposes.

DESCRIPTION

  • This is one of my favorite hikes of all time. Join us for an awesome and fun 11-12 mile hike around the Princeton area.
  • Princeton - the town, the University campus, and the surrounding area, are awesome to explore any time of year. Hoping it will be a bit cooler by this point in the year and hoping we'll see some beginning of Fall Color - but that's not guaranteed.
  • This hike will be very "winding" - you will need to keep up with us. If you fall behind and can't see the person ahead of you, you need to speed up!

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Princeton University Campus
  • Downtown Princeton
  • Princeton Cemetery
  • Graduate College Campus
  • Palmer Square
  • Princeton Theological Seminary Campus
  • Battle of Princeton Monument
  • Einstein's House
  • Institute for Advanced Study
  • IAS Woods | Charles H. Rogers Wildlife Refuge
  • Princeton Stadium
  • Temple of Doom Bridge

This hike will involve flat, city walking, trails, and possibly muddy trails if it's been raining a lot recently.

GEAR/WHAT TO BRING:

  • Good hiking boots or sneakers (something you don't mind getting muddy, dirty, dusty, etc., depending on conditions
  • Water (36-48 oz at least)
  • Appropriate clothing
  • Bug spray, sunscreen, hats
  • Snacks, lunch, etc.
  • A beer or two for lunch

LUNCH:

  • Treat this like a nature hike. Bring lunch (sandwiches) and/or snacks (jerky, granola bars, fruit, nuts, yogurt, etc.) with you. We will pause for 25-30 minutes at some point, no I don't know what specific time - no later than 1:30-2pm. We will not be stopping by any place to pick up or eat lunch at a bar/restaurant.

BATHROOMS:

  • THIS IS A CITY AND NATURE HIKE!!!!! I will try to incorporate two quick bathroom breaks (10 minutes). But there are long stretches without one. We'll be in the woods for part of it, including our lunch stop, so you will have access to mother nature. Monitor your food/liquid intake to ensure you don't find yourself in an awkward situation at some point.

DRIVE TIME/PARKING/CARPOOLING:

  • On a Sunday morning it should be about an hour drive (from Center City Philadelphia). Please check ahead of time so you're not late.

PARKING

  • Park in the parking lot marked on Google Maps (though you cannot pin it) as the "North Garage" next to the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials - 70 Prospect Ave, Princeton, NJ 08540
  • Parking is free.
  • I'll be outside by 9:30am (I hope lol) on the corner to direct people. Look for a group of hikers and our red IBO flag.

AFTERWARDS

  • Afterwards we will go to a local bar/restaurant for food/drinks before driving home. Figure we'll be in the area till about 7pm or so. Last year some folks stayed out real late and had a good time - but this is the day after our Octoberfest so people may not be in the mood for another late night.

HEALTH & SAFETY

  • Heath and Wellbeing are your own responsibility. Please adhere to all applicable local, state, and federal guidelines in place on the day of the event.

RSVPS

  • Keep your RSVPS up to date. Multiple no-shows will lead to you getting removed from the group. Constantly signing up for events and dropping out (like 12 times a year) is also a no-no.
