If we had cheap electricity galore we could use it to produce hydrogen as an energy carrier and give it a much larger and cleaner role in key industrial processes like steel and fertilizer production and in transportation. It could also stabilize our power grid by syphoning off excess power from intermittent wind and solar. That is the Department of Energy’s new “Big Idea”, and teams at NREL and across the nation are exploring its possibilities.
Mark Ruth is a Principal Project Lead and Engineer at NREL’s Strategic Energy Analysis Center where he investigates the potential benefits of “Hydrogen at Scale,” simulating how energy producers and consumers will interact, and other projects. Contact: Martin Voelker, jcres@cres-energy.org
