Biochar: How Manmade Coal Removes CO2 and Improves Soil
Jonah Levine, Confluence Energy

Ancient civilisations in the Amazon have transformed very poor tropical soils into deep, dark humus - by making biochar! It’s basically the art of making charcoal from any kind of wood or plant material without allowing air in. Today’s biochar renaissance offers both low and high tech solutions. Its biggest promises are carbon removal, soil improvements and biofuel production. Once biochar is processed and dug into the soil not only does this lock in the carbon for hundreds of years, it also makes the soil more fertile. Jonah Levine works for Confluence Energy, a large wood pellet manufacturer which uses pine beetle killed wood to make biochar.
