Hiking Navigation Maps on your Smartphone to Guide you on the Trail while on Airplane Mode

Did you know that the GPS tracker in many of newer smart phone models will work in Airplane mode? The technical term is GPS Chip. If your Smartphone has a GPS Chip it will work Airplane mode.

AllTrails is the number one outdoors app for IPhone and Android. There are over 50,000 of the most popular hiking trail maps on it. AllTrails is one of many choices. I am familiar with it so I can teach you how to use it and how it can keep you from getting lost on the trail. More importantly if you do happen to make a wrong turn somewhere you can easily get back on the right path.

Feel more secure if you get separated from your hiking group. With this knowledge you can find your way safely to your destination. Avoid going off-trail that can expose you to poison ivy, poison oak and injury risk.

I will show you how to download maps on the app into your Smartphone for use offline. With GPS trackers now working in Airplane mode on many recent models you don’t need phone service anymore to track your steps on the trail.

This training will follow our Wednesday night hike to Potato Mountain. If you are attending the hike please sign up so we can sit together at the restaurant.

If you are not hiking with us on Wednesday you are invited to come. All I ask is that you please patronize the restaurant and not bring food and drinks from the outside. The hikers on Wednesday night usually order drinks and a dinner. But if you prefer a simple soda or dessert order that would be OK.

WHAT TO BRING:

Smart Phone Fully Charged

A model with a GPS Chip like IPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 6, 6+ with IOS 8.3 or newer operating system.

Several Android models will work. Please check online to see if your Android model has a GPS Chip in it.

AllTrails App installed on your Smartphone. Free version is OK. I have paid version so I can show you the difference.
