Android Tour plus Hands-on Session

  • This location is shown only to members

2-hour Android Hands-on Learning Session where you can get a tour of the Android platform, ask questions and hack on Android projects.

So you want to be an Android developer...

If you are interested in meeting other people learning to build Android applications, building a project or you just want a quick tour of what it takes to be an Android app developer, come check out this session. There are two sections for this meetup.

For those totally new to Android development, we will be providing a high-level tour of Android development concepts with a live demo and answer any questions you may have along the way.

For those of you that have been here before, we will discuss the process of building typical Android apps and provide a practical introduction to key topics through a collaborative development session.

For those of you already familiar with high level Android concepts, we will also have a separate corner where you can work on your own Android tutorials or projects and ask any questions you might have.

We're always looking for office space to host these events and maybe provide snacks and drinks.  Let us know if you know someone who can host!

Thanks again to Marvin and the TA's for their time and preparation for the meetup! It was informative, and the line-by-line breakdown was a great help.

Also, the tips to use the genymotion emulator and auto-complete in eclipse are time-savers that i will be putting into use.

I just wanted to say thanks again to Warren and the others for today; my takeaways as an iOS person were (i) a reminder that, like Objective-C, Java objects are always on the heap but conversely that the language is essentially non-reflective; (ii) a sense that Android is much closer to the CSS school of declarative layouts than to the procedural iOS approach; and (iii) the idea that adaptors do the intermediary controller work that delegates and data sources might in Objective-C.

So, assuming I actually got those things right, that's actually quite a few of the immediate stumbling blocks demystified. Thanks again!

How to setup the Genymotion emulator:

This is from the codepath guide to google maps, but follow the steps listed in this section to set up the emulator.

Highly recommend getting Genymotion if you plan on diving in deep into Android development. Genymotion is fast and efficient, making it much more convenient for testing your Android apps. What's also nice in Genymotion is the different pre-set device profiles you can test against. Very effrctive for testing how your app runs in different resolutions/DPI settings, as well as different Android OS versions (i.e. Gingerbread, ICS, JellyBean, KitKat).
