Plain Language 2.0 for Translation: Add Style to Your Writing without Sacrificing Clarity
Good writing is compelling. It's always clear and has pizazz. Plain Language (PL) champions good writing, and yet its efforts often fail because it mistakes oversimplification for clarity and style for verbosity. Some PL maxims are ill-suited to fix the problems we face: articulating complex ideas and solving translatability issues (stemming from conflicting worldviews between languages). Ditching the passive voice is hardly a solution. Come learn some writing secrets that will boost your clarity and enhance your style! We'll work on coherence and cohesion strategies (e.g., recasting, topicalization, ellipsis, etc.) that double up as translation techniques.
