I'm Leah, and I started this project three years ago as a book club called Literary Lesbians of Denver. Its stated purpose was to be a local (Denver) place for lesbians to gather monthly and discuss a predetermined book. Honestly, and more to the point, I was terrified by the political climate, and I wanted to discuss The Handmaid's Tale with like-minded women.
This Meetup has become rather popular, and now we have over 800 members. We used to meet at a lesbian bar in Denver, but times have changed, and so has our group. I came to realize that "lesbian" didn't really encompass all that we are, and so we became a group for "queer women & nonbinary folx." Then COVID happened, and we started meeting virtually. Suddenly locality mattered less.
What does matter is that we're inclusive of all people who identify as women or who are nonbinary. We love to read. We strive to be fair and welcoming. We'll continue to meet monthly (virtually) to discuss books that were written by people who identify as women, or as nonbinary.
