Python in the Visual Effects (VFX) Industry

Details
The story and appeal of many blockbuster movies are brought to life through the creativity and artistry of visual effects (VFX). Through VFX, we turn the most expensive, dangerous, or impossible aspects of these movies into the believable worlds and action sequences see on screen and often take for granted.
Over the last 15 years, Python has become an irreplaceable part of the software and processes for VFX production technical environment.
Drawing on analogies from a CI/CD pipeline, this talk will explore the infrastructure used to provide a platform for the creation of visual effects at an industrial scale. Using this analogy to frame our understanding, we'll focus on three primitives; storage, compute and networking, and look at some examples of how Python has been used to help solve problems in each of these areas.
Over the past 20 years, the Moving Picture Company (MPC) has developed its platform for producing VFX. This talk will draw on that experience and look behind the scenes at how Python has helped make this possible. As a global leader in the VFX industry, some of MPC's most famous projects include the Jungle Book, X-Men and the Harry Potter franchise, not to mention advertising campaigns for brands such as Samsung, Ikea and Channel 4.”
The talk will be given by Mark Streatfield, Core Engineering Lead, MPC.
