What we're about

Unlike most meetup groups, this one does not specialize in any one activity. Rather, the aim is to serve as "one stop shopping" for a whole universe of opportunities to get out of the house, DO something that moves the body, brain, and/or soul, and, especially, meet interesting and active people from all walks of life. Examples could include anything from picnics, kayak outings on Lake Wingra, moderate bike rides, and nature walks in the Arboretum to potluck dinners, dancing, and local live music.

As we are casual in our activities, anyone can suggest and run a volleyball game, pickup basketball, a snopwshoes hike or a picnic. Contact me with a date and time and what folks should bring and we'll get it posted. I'd also like to get volunteers (or recommendations) to teach the basics of sports and other activities. For many, it has been years since they played CASUAL basketball, tennis, volleyball, or softball or they may NEVER have done these things.

In that same light, we will be drastically reducing "Bar Time" to perhaps one "Meet and Greet" per month where we can also share suggestions and ideas of events to do. There are lots of groups for beer, wine and whatever so if you think drinking is an activity you should look there.

So, whether you're new to Madison or a native simply looking to widen your horizons, whether you're single or in a relationship, whether you're old or young, this group will have something to offer! We require you to use your real name (first name at least) and a current head shot photo of just you. You can't be anonymous and social!! With a current photo and proper name you'll be able to find your friends and, I hope this is few and far between, anyone who "misbehaves" can be immediately identified.

John is the nominal organizer, but he will depend heavily on both suggestions and assistance from the group's members in order to keep a full schedule of activities on the calendar.

Introduction to Handgun Shooting

Deerfield Pistol & Archery Center

A few years back we had quite a few interested in learning to shoot a handgun in a safe and professional environment. Many were interested in personal protection and some in sport. I hosted a number of events at the former Gander Mountain which has closed its operations under new ownership. I have found a great program, slightly more expensive but far more inclusive.

First Shots Class - An introduction to shooting

You never forget your First Shots. If you are new to the shooting sport and would like to come in and get some basic firearm instruction this is the class. The evening will include about 1 hour of lecture on firearms operation, safety, shooting technique. It then includes live fire time on the range where they will provide safety glasses and hearing protection (for you to keep!) so the cost includes range time, firearm rental, ammo, targets, use of eye and ear protection and basic handgun instruction.

MASKS REQUIRED DURING CLASS

ALL SALES ARE FINAL. ANY CANCELLATIONS PRIOR TO 24 HOURS BEFORE THE CLASS WILL BE GIVEN A CREDIT FOR A FUTURE CLASS. (CALL STORE TO RESCHEDULE) ANY CANCELLATIONS AFTER 24 HOUR BEFORE THE CLASS OR A NO SHOW WILL BE A FORFEITURE OF TUITION.

Beginner Swing Dance Lessons - Guys, Learn SWING -I still have 4 Extra Ladies

PLEASE No more ladies at this time. I want you to have the best experience and while Swing is an "equal" dance, the roles are slightly different.

Learn some beginning Swing moves this August on Tuesday evenings. You’ll learn the basics of Swing in 5 lessons (Once again pay for 4, get 5).

Swing is actually a whole family of dances, all of which evolved from the original swing dance, the Lindy Hop of the 1920s. With its free-wheeling style and adaptability to new kinds of music, swing has never gone out of style. You can Swing to many different styles and we have some great Swing events in Madison and will soon in Dodgeville!
Lessons are August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31st.

Partners preferred though not required. We cannot guarantee a partner but voluntarily rotate throughout the class so no one is "out" more than a minute or two. Classes are open to ages 16 and up.

American (Ballroom) Tango

Dance Easy

$40.00

Learn some beginning Ballroom Tango this August on Tuesday evenings. You’ll learn the basics of American Tango in 5 lessons (Once again pay for 4, get 5). This is the more formalized ballroom Tango not to be confused with the improvisational Argentine Tango.

The tango was born in Argentina, in the late 1800s. In those days, the bars of Buenos Aires were filled with lonely immigrants from all over Europe and Africa, looking for diversion and company. Somehow, out of these eclectic dance traditions, a dance emerged that pantomimed communication between prostitute and pimp. From these crude beginnings came the sexually charged dance we see here.
Since then, the tango has been toned down somewhat, and has incorporated patterns from other dances such as the waltz and foxtrot, but it still packs a powerful punch, translating emotions into dance like nothing else.
Lessons are August 3, 10, 17, 24, 31st.
