What we're about

Interested in debating current affairs with a friendly and interesting group of people? Whether you're a seasoned debater or simply interested in hearing other people's views (while of course expressing your own!), this is a group you can get involved in. Each meet-up, usually held on the third Friday of the month, offers a dynamic discussion on four issues spanning global politics to local events. Members suggest the topics in advance via this site, and the debate itself is usually an informal and lively gathering of people from a range of backgrounds and political persuasions. Sound interesting? Then sign up!

We want to create an environment in which to have meaningful and fun discussions in which people feel safe to voice their opinions. In order to be able to do this there must be mutual respect within the group regardless of differing opinions. Please can members attending meet ups adhere to the following ground rules:

Please do

raise your hand when you wish to say something,

Where possible address the group as a whole
let whoever is speaking finish what they are saying and refrain from interrupting them

Please do not

heckle, ridicule name call other members
point at other members
raise your voice when speaking to another member
swear at other members.
hold private conversations whilst a member is speaking to the group

Online Video Debate

Online politics and current affairs debate via Zoom video chat. Submit questions in the comments as normal and we will vote at the start of a meeting. We will try to run two sessions per week. Please sign up for the free version of Zoom prior to the meeting. https://zoom.us/ The link for the debate will be posted in the comments prior to the meeting starting. Demand is high so please be considerate and change your RSVP to no if you can no longer make it. Topics are collated from members' suggestions on the website and at the beginning of the meeting. Members can vote for topics of their choice and the 3 most popular topics will be discussed. If there is anything you wish to discuss, please add your suggestions to this page. Topics do not have to be political. We have previously discussed issues such as religion, relationships, even space travel!

Informal Debate/Discussion

Location visible to members

A more casual group discussion than the main monthly debates, with topics chosen democratically on the day by the members. Please feel free to post your suggestions on the website. There is an increased opportunity to have a greater input into the discussion and to get to know the other group members. Everyone is welcome!! Combative or threatening behaviour/language is not acceptable. Many times we have people RSVP for meetings and then fail to change their RSVP when they cant make it. This means others who wanted to come cannot attend. We know people have last minute plans that sometimes go wrong sometimes, but at the very least, please try to change your RSVP before the meeting if you cant make it. In the event you RSVP 'yes' but don't turn up once or twice, we'll send a message to find out why. If it happens a third time, we will place you temporarily on the ban list for 12 months as its unfair to block others. Finally in order to cover the cost of the room we ask for a donation of £2. Many thanks Thank you for your cooperation

Debate

Our next debate will be in the meeting room upstairs at the Waldorf pub https://www.waldorfmanchester.co.uk/ Everyone is welcome; especially if it is your first time. This group is made up of diverse people. If you feel yourself to be different then welcome: so are we. New faces with new opinions are much valued. Debate is a dispassionate attempt to get at the truth of any given issue through reason. An argument is two or more propositions leading to a conclusion that is meant to persuade someone of the truth of any given matter. Persuasion trumps coercion every time. Assent is important but so is dissent. To paraphrase Shakespeare, be true to thine own self and be false to no man. Speak and be heard
