We are delighted to welcome Dr Anders Sandberg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anders_Sandberg) from the Future of Humanity Institute in Oxford to talk to us about the far future. In his words:

Existential risks, threats to the survival and flourishing of humanity, matter because they threaten not just the present generation but all future generations and all the value they could achieve. But just how much can be achieved in the long run? How many future generations can there be? In this talk I will explore some of what is known about the limits of advanced civilizations, our ability to colonize the universe, and the constraints the astrophysics of the far future pose for life and intelligence.

Anders Sandberg’s research at the Future of Humanity Institute centres on management of low-probability high-impact risks, estimating the capabilities of future technologies, and very long-range futures. Topics of particular interest include global catastrophic risk, cognitive biases, cognitive enhancement, collective intelligence, neuroethics, and public policy. He is research associate to the the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, the Oxford Centre for Neuroethics, and the Institute for Future Studies. He is on the advisory boards of a number of organisations and often debates science and ethics in international media.

As usual, our lovely hosts AutoTrader will provide refreshments; please get in touch with dietary or access requirements!
