The Challenges of Living with Disabilities

Details

In the next event of Meetup’s Dismantling Social Injustice series, we will hear insights on some of the issues facing 61 million Americans who live with disabilities.

Join Beth Wiesendanger, Senior Program Manager, Public Policy, Diversity & Inclusion at Fiverr, and Lawrence Carter-Long, Director of Communications, Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF), for a panel discussion with Jeanine Mioton, PR Lead, Meetup, as moderator. Participants will learn about the historical and structural disparities that affect people with disabilities, and how disparities are perpetuated in workplaces, the media, and other institutions. From there, the panelists will share the necessary actions to address inequities so that those with disabilities can succeed and thrive.

A Q&A session will follow the panel discussion.

About the panelists:
Beth Wiesendanger, Senior Program Manager, Public Policy - Diversity & Inclusion, Fiverr
Since 2011, Beth has worked in community building. She began her career in politics, joining Grassroots Campaigns, then later moved to corporate community building. Beth joined Fiverr in 2016 to help build the community program and take Fiverr’s online network of professionals offline and into the real world, leveraging resources to empower communities at scale. Today, as Fiverr's Senior Program Manager, Public Policy - Diversity & Inclusion she is a champion of bringing people together and leveraging resources to educate, inform, and inspire the Fiverr community.

Disability and accessibility are not just Beth’s career passions, but her lived experiences as well. As a double-amputee Beth is incredibly focused on pushing the boundaries of how we think about creating accessible solutions and spaces that don’t just fix broken systems, but shift entire paradigms.

Lawrence Carter-Long, Director of Communications, Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF)
Lawrence is a difficult man to peg or to pin down and that’s just the way he likes it. LCL–as friends call him–has been on the frontlines of popular culture and social change since the age of five when he was drafted to be a poster child for a disability-related charity campaign. A lifelong activist, as an adult Lawrence has been a modern dancer, radio show host and producer, and was the curator/co-host of groundbreaking festival “THE PROJECTED IMAGE: A HISTORY OF DISABILITY ON FILM” on Turner Classic Movies reaching 87 million people. Formerly the Public Affairs Specialist for the National Council on Disability—the independent federal agency that brought us the Americans with Disabilities Act, he joined the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund in July 2017, as our first-ever Director of Communications and spearheads our revitalized Disability & Media Alliance Project.
