Organizing with Pride: LGBTQ+ Community Building

Link visible for attendees

It’s Pride Month! Let’s honor this occasion by celebrating love, acceptance, and living authentically. During this Meetup Live event, we’re gathering Meetup organizers to discuss how they create a safe space for their members.

Join us for a panel discussion with LGBTQ+ group organizers, Doni Burton, Wil Fisher, and Carly Novoselsky, as they share their best practices for crafting a community where members feel welcomed to come as they are. Hear about how they structure their groups to foster acceptance, from finding great venues to fostering discussions where everyone feels included. Stick around for the Q&A at the end.

Agenda:

  • Introductions (5 mins)
  • Panel Discussion (40 mins)
  • Q&A session (15 mins)

About Panelists:
Doni Burton has a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science from Ball State University. She currently works as a Provider Contract/Cost of Care Senior Consultant at Elevance Health where she leads analytics and modeling support for Value Based contracting activities and delivers critical analysis to drive strategic decision making. She focuses her efforts on improving healthcare outcomes through improving quality of care and increasing member and provider network satisfaction. Doni lives in Washington, DC and enjoys international travel, playing volleyball, and seeing Broadway musicals in her free time.

Wil Fisher is a spiritual coach, retreat leader, podcaster, teacher, speaker and performer who lives in San Diego, CA. Wil spent 15 years in NYC where, among other things, he consulted for nonprofits, completed a masters in applied theater, founded an org called Man Question which worked to dismantle toxic masculinity, and wrote and performed a solo play about his relationship with drag and gender. He left NYC to go run an LGBTQ retreat center in upstate New York where he began learning many diverse modalities for healing, personal growth and spiritual development. During that time he also became a trained and certified life coach. Now, he focuses on building his spiritual coaching company Willfully Living, his podcast Queerly Beloved, and the local GBTQ men's community through initiatives with his Meetup group.

Carly Novoselsky, LPC, CADC (she/her) is a dynamic sober, queer femme who is fiercely passionate about the intersection of mental health, substance abuse and the queer community. She has her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adler University and is currently an Addiction Counselor living in Chicago. With a background in the hospitality industry, Carly now runs Queer Sober Social (QSS), a sex-positive, open-minded group for anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community who is seeking authentic queer connections sans alcohol or drugs. QSS holds monthly virtual and in-person social gatherings for its members and also has an active online community full of support. Carly is also a co-host on the Queer Sober Social Podcast where she lifts queer voices and tells the stories she so desperately needed to hear when first getting sober. In her free time, you can find Carly checking out all the local restaurants Chicago has to offer as she’s a true foodie at heart.
