Vernal and Nevada Falls via the Mist Trail
Overview: Millions of people have walked Yosemite's trails and rested with friends, surrounded by colorful rocks, trees and sky. Among these visitors included many notable historic figures, such as John Muir, Ansel Adams, Teddy Roosevelt, and many more. On this hike, along the Mist Trail to Vernal Fall, and then onto Nevada Fall, we'll visit and search for places where some of these people have actually sat and rested, and even spent a night or two. Trail Conditions/Hiker Skills: We'll saunter along this popular trail, which is known for its beauty and steepness. Although hiking the trail can be strenuous, our pace will be slow and many breaks will be taken. Nevertheless, we'll gain about 2,500 feet in elevation (and then lose it on the way back down), so your knees and legs will definitely feel this hike. We'll make a loop (about 8 miles round trip), first going up the steep route next to the waterfalls, then down "the long way," so the descent will bypass the stairs and be less steep. In October, Yosemite can be quite dramatic with colorful fall leaves and stormy skies, so be sure to bring a camera and appropriate shoes and clothing. We'll end the trip with an opportunity to eat dinner in Yosemite. Logistics/Transportation: At 930am, we'll rendezvous at the Half Dome Village "check-in" office (right next to the bus drop off and west of the Pizza Patio). That's about a 7am departure time from Merced. I'll be leaving from the Mariposa park-n-ride lot (next to Rite Aid - 4994 Joe Howard Street) at 8am, and will have several seats available for those who wish to carpool. We'll hike throughout the day, returning the Half Dome Village about 5pm..
