How to Scale Agile (...just kidding! Let's kill it instead)
No, we are not going to talk about Scaling Agile. We are going to talk about killing it instead. (Interesting side-note: both topics have similar outcomes) There have been some incredibly important concepts in software development created and written about over the last 20 years or so. Concepts, frameworks, and tools like agile, lean software development, extreme programming, the kanban method, lean startup, scrum... to name just a few. When the inventive minds responsible for great concepts like these give them to the world, they often make a request, “handle with care, and don’t apply blindly”. Essentially, buy the book but don’t blindly do what’s in there... But that’s often (exactly) what people do. And lo and behold it works! That sounds pretty good. So, what’s the problem? When these approaches are applied to important challenges and achieve positive results - and people don’t really understand why - the approach itself takes on some interesting qualities. Namely, it becomes something like a religious artifact. It’s a phenomenon. Magic. In other words, this is how dogma is born. This then sets the groundwork for a deeply Orwellian mis-application of these concepts. This will be a conversation on why this is bad (very bad), why it’s getting worse, and what we can do about it. Come and help save agile by killing it.
