What we're about

Do you have a meditation practice? Want to start one? Curious about mindfulness and how to integrate mindfulness into your life? Looking to deepen your practice? This is a group for anyone interested in practicing or learning about mindfulness and meditation. There are so many wonderful opportunities to practice with communities in other boroughs of NYC--but not so many in Queens. Let's create mindful community right here in our own neighborhood so we can support one another and practice together. This Meetup group will be used to post local mindfulness events, meditation classes, talks, and more. No experience with meditation or mindfulness necessary. All experience levels welcome. Please note: you do NOT have to live in Astoria (or even in Queens) to attend one of our meetups.

Check out our website (https://mindfulastoria.wordpress.com/) to learn more about us. Like our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/mindfulastoria?pnref=story) for updates, news, articles, and more.

Afternoon Silent Retreat, Sun December 11th, 1pm-5pm

First Presbyterian Church

Please note: This retreat will be for in-person attendance only. For practice with Mindful Astoria via Zoom, please join our Wednesday 7:30-8:30pm meditation gatherings, and our Monday 7am-7:30am & 8pm-8:30pm silent sits.

REGARDING IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE:

Importantly, PLEASE REVIEW THE COVID SAFETY GUIDELINES further down in this event description before you RSVP.

Also, note that IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE IS LIMITED TO 10 PEOPLE (plus Mindful Astoria teachers and staff) to ensure Covid safety compliance. Once those 10 spots are filled, RSVP's will go to a waitlist. Given our limited in-person capacity, we ask that you be mindful of the space that is being held for you--and if you won't be able to attend, be sure to let us know so that someone on the waitlist can attend.

ABOUT OUR AFTERNOON SILENT RETREAT

Join us for an afternoon of silent meditation practice. Learn how to cultivate mindfulness--knowing what is happening within you and around you, so you can respond skillfully and with awareness--and how to bring the benefits of meditation practice into daily life.

By deepening our awareness through an extended period of meditation practice, we can let the mind settle, gently notice the habits of our mind, and meet our experience with a genuine sense of groundedness and kindness.

The afternoon will consist of periods of sitting meditation, gentle stretching and yoga (adaptable for all abilities), periods of silent practice, and time to ask questions and discuss meditation within a supportive community.

Some previous experience with meditation recommended. If you are brand new to meditation and want to know if this retreat is right for you, contact [masked].

Participants are asked to keep their phones off or on silent for duration of the retreat.

Please wear comfortable clothing, have a water bottle and anything else you might need to be comfortable.

If you have any questions, please email [masked].

If you are able to offer financial support a suggested donation of $20 can be sent via PayPal to: [masked]. This will enable us to continue offering programs, and to continue to give donations to Astoria First Presbyterian Church. (No one will ever be turned away due to lack of funds).

Teachers: Manaslu and Carl. Read more about our teaching team at www.mindfulastoria.com.

Monday 7am Silent Community Meditation

Online event

ABOUT OUR MONDAY 7AM AND 8PM SILENT COMMUNITY MEDITATIONS

How many of us are struggling to have a daily meditation practice? At a time of social distancing, when we are missing our normal interactions with friends, family and neighbors, sitting on our meditation cushion sometimes feels like an extension of this isolation.

At Mindful Astoria, we reach out to our community and to each other to find support for our practice. Keeping this in mind, we would like to invite you to join us for a silent community meditation every Monday at 7am and 8pm.

The format for the sit will be simple: you log in using the Zoom link sent in Mindful Astoria's weekly emails. Someone will ring a bell to mark the beginning and end of the half hour silent meditation. There will be no guided instructions. The bell ringer may chose to share a poem at the end of the sit.

We hope you will join us and make this a weekly practice and discover the deep connections that can transpire from holding space together in silence.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR MINDFUL ASTORIA ONLINE EVENTS:

In order to increase our online security, we no longer post our Zoom links on Meetup. Instead, WE WILL SEND AND EMAIL EVERY WEDNESDAY WITH ZOOM LINKS for all of the coming week's events (Wed-Tue).

To receive these emails, please fill out this registration form:

https://forms.gle/dgZpH2yo6oPatYhu9

ZOOM LINKS WILL BE SENT OUT ONCE A WEEK on Wednesday mornings starting February 2. The deadline to sign up for emails will be 10PM on TUESDAY for that week's online events. You only need to register once to receive Zoom links on a weekly basis.

IF YOU ARE REGISTERING FOR THE FIRST TIME to attend our sessions, please allow up to 1 week to receive zoom links. (For example, if you register on a Wednesday at 2pm, you will receive an email the following Wednesday morning).

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SIGNED UP to receive emails from us, you do not need to fill out the form again. (If you only receive our messages through Meetup, you will need to fill out the registration form.)

Feel free to email us at [masked] with any questions.

If you join us for an online program, we ask if you are able to offer financial support (we suggest $5-$10 per event) via the app/website PayPal to our email address: [masked]. This will enable us to continue offering programs, and to continue to give donations to Astoria First Presbyterian Church--our Wednesday night home--while their space is closed. (No one will ever be turned away due to lack of funds.)

ABOUT OUR WEDNESDAY MEDITATION GATHERINGS

During this time of physical distancing, we can still join together as a community online to practice meditation and cultivate mindfulness and kindness.

Each gathering will consist of instruction in different forms of mindfulness meditation, and time for group discussion and connecting with the community. Depending on the week, the teacher may give a talk or share a reading.

Gatherings will be led by different members of our teaching team. Read more about our teaching team here:

When you sign on, please close all other tabs and programs, and have your phone away from you, or on silent.
