East St Paul (ESP) Speculative Fiction Writers Meetup

The bad roads really reduced attendance at our Meetup this month. In spite of it all, we did three critiques and then had some discussion on how to avoid procrastination when trying to keep up with our writing.

Our next Meetup will be on January 8, 2013 (Elvis's 78th birthday for those who care). The topic will be Working Around the Info Dump.

We will accept three submissions for critique. The guidelines are as follows:

1) Submissions must be under 10,000 words.

2) Must be listed in Files under MORE! by January 1st. Remember that you must be logged in on the Home Page to get into Files.

3) Must be prefaced with [ESP Crit 1-8] so we know it's for our group.

4) Should be in Word or Rich Text File but not doc.x or PDF.

Guidelines for critiques:

1) Go into Files under MORE! for submissions under [ESP Crit 1-8].

2) Print out the manuscript and make comments on it to give to the author. (It's OK to change the format for convenience).

3) If you prefer, you can read the piece online and write comments on a separate sheet of paper.

4) When making critiques in person, we should keep the comments to one person speaking at a time without interruptions. The discussions should be after all the critiques are finished.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and guidance. Your suggestions were incredibly helpful, and I already got to work revising my first chapter. It was also great to see Susan and Robert get their work critiqued. As a group, you really made me feel welcomed, and I'm looking forward to attending next month. Thanks!

Looking forward to the next Meetup! If anyone is interested in beta reading, I have about 5 or 6 different books right now I would like to query out to new agents. I'd also love an opinion on all my query letters. Send me a message!

Genta Sebastian does beta reading. You may want to connect with her.

I'm sorry I had to miss the Meetup. I caught the crud that is going around and decided at the last minute that I better not go. I read the three chapters and found them all intriguing - I was pulled into their stories quite easily and can't wait to find out what happens to their characters. I hope to attend a future Meetup and meet you all in person.

The really large groups makes the critiques go on a little longer than I would like, but the up side is meeting so many really wonderful people.
